Leonard A. Coffman, 92

Leonard A. Coffman, 92, of Greeneville, widely known retired Greeneville High School coach and teacher and a University of Tennessee 1930s football legend, died Thursday at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.

GREENEVILLE — Leonard A. Coffman, 92 of died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007 at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.

He was a member of Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr. Coffman served two years in the United States Army 1st Corps and reached the rank of Captain; he then spent thirty years in the Army Reserve where he reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served in the Officers Training Camps.

Survivors include his daughter: Carol Coffman of Greeneville; one niece and her spouse: Jean and Terry Nichols of Knoxville; one nephew and his spouse: Tom and Karleene Heck of Knoxville; one great niece: Korrie Heck of Knoxville; two great nephews: Aaron and Conner Heck of Knoxville; and Mr. Coffman’s best friend: Fred.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Jennie King Coffman; parents: Marion and Laura Templeton Coffman; one brother: Earl Coffman; one sister: Ruth Heck.

Funeral serviceswill be Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 8 p.m. at the Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Interment will be Thursday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jamie Lively and the Rev. Roy Blakeburn will be officiating.

Family and pallbearers are asked to meet at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home by no later than 10 a.m. Thursday to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will include: John McInturff, John Graham, Leroy Moon, Jack Trantham, Rob Russell, Grady Barefield, Bill Gass and Paul McCamey.

Honorary pallbearers will include all the players Mr. Coffman has coached in the past years.

Memorials are suggested to the University of Tennessee Athletic Department.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Sept. 4, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Wednesday, Sept. 5 from 2-4 and 6-7:30 p.m.. at Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
