Hobert C. Ridings, 82, of Noblesville, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at Harbour Manor Care Center in Noblesville. He was born on February 20, 1936 to Andrew and Goldie (Parsons) in Keokee, Virginia.

Hobert proudly served in the United States Army. He was a supervisor at National Power Flow in Elwood, Indiana for 33 years. After retiring, Hobert worked for the Noblesville School System. His hobby was a perfectionist wood craftsman.

He is survived by his daughters, Rita (Mark) Livesay and Dawn (Roger) Rausch; son, Dennis Ridings; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Ridings; sister, Ceonia "Sis" Woodard; and son, Gary Ridings.

Services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Randall & Roberts Funeral Home, 1150 Logan Street in Noblesville, with Pastor Lanny Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.

Thelma Ridings, 72, of Noblesville, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2013, at home. She was born on October 20, 1940 to Willard and Georgia (Dean) Lewis in St. Charles, Virginia.

Thelma worked as a shipping clerk for Industrial Dielectrics INC in Noblesville, IN; and was a member of Fishers Church of Christ.

She is survived by husband, Hobert Ridings; daughters, Rita Hurlock and Dawn Ridings; son, Dennis Ridings, 7 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Gary Ridings; brothers, James Lewis, Jesse "Peewee" Lewis, and Kenneth Lewis.

Services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Randall & Roberts Funeral Home, 1150 Logan Street, in Noblesville, with Pastor Lanny Smith officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 20, 2013 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Burial will be at Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.

Why the family moved to Lee Co VA?

In 1901 the Yellow Creek Coal and Lumber Company was formed with E. S. Helburn, Joe Bosworth, J. G. Fitzpatrick and A. H. Rennebaum as owners of the company. These men, known locally as "The Yellow Creek Crowd" were active and influential civic leaders for many years. Their families were close friends with their wives working together on community activities and their children often intermarried. The strength of these men and others who owned the mines kept many of the mines operating as non-union mines for years.

In 1910, mine operators in District 19 refused to sign the UMWA contract when it came up for renewal. By 1919, there was again a strike to force the recognition of the UMWA in the mines. In 1921, the UMWA called a general strike that lasted into 1922. This idled twelve to fifteen thousand miners in the area. Nonunion miners who tried to work were threatened and even fired upon. Eventually all the mines were closed.
Finally the strike was settled and miners returned to work. In 1924, District 19 broke with the UMWA and accepted a reduction in wages. Then the depression hit and times were tough for all. Times remained unsettled through the 1930’s with boom and bust years for the coal industry.
