According to Perdita Williams book:
George Washington Musser once lived in Kentucky. Legend says that somewhere on the trip to Virginia, he swam a river with his wife on his back. This happened before Eugene was born.

Became a miller by trade and at one time operated the old Thompson Atkins mill near Atkins, VA

Enlisted in the Confederate States Army on September 4, 1861 at Marion, Virginia in Companny F, 23rd Batalion, Virginia Infantry under Captain W. H. McDonald. He enlisted to serve one year and was sent to Camp Jackson near Wytheville for training. He served immediately under Colonel Derrick and Captain J. C. Killinger. (Carl Wilson Musser, Sr.]

According to Virginia pension records and including F. S. Snavely's sworn affidavit in support of George Musser's claim to a pension as a Confederate veteran, George Musser, Sr., was wounded at the Battle of New Market, VA on May 15, 1864 and taken to the hospital at Staunton. [Carl Wilson Musser, Sr.] According to George Musser's own statment, he was then sent to the Confederate Hospital at Emory and Henry College. [Carl Wilson Musser, Sr.]

Deserted the confederate army after this convalesence and moved to Kentucky to avoid being punished by the "Confederate Police."
Probably in January, 1865 he was tracked down in Kentucky by the Confederate Police. He was able to escape being caught by going onto the roof of the house he and his wife were staying in. By the next morning they couple were across the Ohio River in the Union state of Ohio. His wife was probably 7-8 months pregnant at this time [Carl Wilson Musser, Sr].

At one time, Peter Jr. owned land in the area of the overhead bridge, near Atkins, Virginia brick plant. Was a carpenter. Moved to Ohio and is uncertain whether he remained there or returned to Virginia.

I have Petrus "Adam" Musser (Peter Sr.) born about 1777 in Pennsylvania and wed to Kathtarina (Cattarina)Unknown born in Virginia. Their son Peter Edward Musser (Peter Jr.)born abt. 1812 in Virginia and wed to Susan Redding born 7-2-1812 in NC and died 12-2-1888. Eleven children. Daughter of David Redding and Nora Unknown.

Saw this note from 2004. Need to disprove Peter the son of Adam and Mary, married Susie Ridings. The writer says although debated this part is true. Which part?


My Adam Musser's father was John Hans Musser.Adams wife was Mary Cormanny? They had Peter Edward, who is my GreatGreatetc. Daniel david John GeorgeMicheal Molly Elizabeth Catherine Harry and Anna.
Peter Edwards married Susie Reddings their son was William Jackson Musser He was born in smyth or Wyeth county in 1834, Doc Franklin Musser was his son and my Great Grandfather. Some of what I have has been debated by some of the researchers but this part is true,
Don't know how much help but . it is hard to find as their were alot of Mussers in Smyth County.

This email mentions a son name Archie. I have found nothing to support this except the 1830 Wythe Co census includes a 10-15 year old male in David's household. I also have nothing to support the statement that John P was born in Culpepper County VA. Several researchers on MyHeritage website list an Archibald but undocumented.

Hi Ray

Wow! It always throws me off a bit when I get E-mail on family history. I do recall the post that I sent. Hmmm...where did I get the info from? I have a family history around here somewhere.

OK I found it !! Where I got the info from was a letter written by Henry S. Ridings, now deceased (Henry is my husbands great uncle/great grand son to David Ridings) the letter is not dated but I do know that it was written many, many years ago. The info states that his great grandfather David Ridings was born on the North bend of the Yadkin River in 1784 died in KY in 1881. The way I understand this is that his wife's name was Elizabeth and they had children born in NC Bill, Archie, Matson and a daughter but that John P. was born in Culpepper County, VA 1813 dies in KY 1892. I don't know what took them to VA. That is all I have, if I can come up with more info I will let you know. I might be able to put you in touch with other family members that have more history. Smyth Co VA was formed in 1832 from parts of Wythe and Washington Cos.


David was 75 in 1860 but his date of death of July 11 1881. He would have been 96.
I cannot find him in the 1870 or 1880 census and wonder if the year on his marker is actually 1861.

Classification: QuerySurnames: Hi Jim, I might have some info for you on the Ridings family. My husbands family also came from England. The story that we have always heard was that we they came here they settled in North Carolina along the Yadkin River. Check the library I believe there is a book about the people of the Yadkin River area and the Ridings are mentioned. My husbands great-great-great grandfather was David Ridings born Sept. 7th 1784 on the north bend of the Yadkin River. Died July 11th 1881 Somerset Kentucky. Before there life in Kentucky he lived with his wife Elizabeth in Jonesville, Lee county Virgina. This is where my husbands great-great grandfather John Perkins Ridings was born in Culpepper County, so on and so on. It seemed the story was told that when the Ridings came to America there were 3 brothers and they branched of and went in different directions. So check out the history of the Yadkin River you may find so info. It sounds like you might be from the same branch as our family.
