Floyd Tiller was struck and killed by the Burlington passenger train No. 43. Tuesday afternoon while attempting to cross the trestle over Sulpher creek about one mile west of town. Mr. Tiller bad been out hunting and was returning home. He was part way across the trestle when a warning blast from the whistle attracted bis attention to the rapidly approaching train.
Being a cripple, having to walk with a crutch, and being much impeded by bis game bag and gun, be tried vainly to gain the end of the bridge toward which the train was rushing. He was within but a few feet of solid earth and safety when the pilot of the engine struck him.
He was burled by the impact turn the east end of the trestle to the west end, a distance of some fifty feet or more, where his lifeless body was later picked up by a number of friends of the family who were hurried to the scene of accident on switch engine 1314, and the remains were brought to the city and carried to the family residence.
Dr. T. P. Gronoway, coroner, was summoned and an inquest was held Tuesday evening, the jury returning a verdict of unavoidable accident.
The funeral services were held from the family residence Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Elder F. T. Mussell. Interment was made in Oakwood cemetery.
Floyd Tiller was born in Virginia in 1843 and came to Bevier about fourteen years ago where be has since worked in the mines. Some few years ago he met with an accident which made him a cripple, so much so that many a man would have thought himself incapable of work. Not so with Mr. Tiller, however, and be remained in the employ of the company until his death, He was an industrious kindhearted man.
Besides the widow, he leaves six children to mourn his loss. They are: Mrs. Mary Hughes, who resides in Randolph county; Mrs. Susie Davis, Mrs. Suer. Jas. Tiller and Miss Bess Tiller, all of whom reside in this city.
