Watheta J. McNutt, 82, Gas City, died at 12:51 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at Marion General Hospital. She was born in Bonnie Blue, Virginia, to the late Stallard and Edith (Moore) McNutt.

Watheta was a computer operator and previously worked at Crystal Laundry in Jonesboro. She was also previously employed at General Tire and RCA in their data entry/payroll departments. Watheta liked to travel, read about everything, and go to rummages and craft festivals. She always looked forward to watching fireworks, especially the ones her son did. In addition to all who had an opportunity to know her, Watheta will be missed by her family and friends, with whom she enjoyed visiting.

She is survived by her son, Kent McNutt, Gas City; sister, Alberta "Sue" Wamsley, Warsaw; nephews and nieces, George E. Timmons, Jr., Warsaw, Lori (Tony) Ehmer, Marion, Kelly (Kim) Timmons, Warsaw, Shelly Timmons, Warsaw, Teri Mihelich, Marion, and Chris McNutt, Fairmount; and several cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Lorin McNutt.

The family will have a memorial service at a later date.

Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City.

Mrs. Moore was a_ lifelong resident of Lee County and was a member of the Christian Church here Surviving are four sons, RobSt. Charles, Royce Pennington Gap, Marshall Moore, Marion, Ind., and Jody Moore. Gas City. Indy: three daughters, Mrs, Edith McKnight. Gas City, Ind., Mrs. Iva Williams, Jonesboro, Ind, and Mrs. Dorothy Johns, Atlanta, Ga.; four sisters, Mrs. Pansy Stapleton, Jonesboro, Ind. Mrs. Beulah Stillman, Kingston, N. C., and Miss Susie Coffman, St. Charles; two brothers, Claude Coffman and Johnny Coffman, both of New Lebanon, Ohio; 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the St. Charles Christian Church with the Rev. Donald Tapp officiating. Burial was in Cecil Cemetery. Province Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

His gravemarker shows Oct 8, 1933. The birth certificate does not show a date of birth but it does show his age as
64 years/6 months/20 days which would resolve to 18 Mar 1869.
The 1870/1880 census shows him borm in abt 1867


Asked if she remembered Henry Coffman,his granddaughter Vida Hale Pope said yes she did. She remembered him as being very kind and gentle. She could remember when she was very young sitting on his lap and him rocking her. Vida said the story of him being shot while riding horseback was not true. The family could have never afforded a horse.

Henry and John Aaron Coffman worked at Bodert Mines which were closed as the depression set in. The two brothers then started working a mine in Pocket. Henry would walk from V.I.C. (a mining camp just outside of St Charles) to Pocket (guessing about 3-4 miles) everyday to work the mine. Henry died shortly after they started up the mine. Vida thought walking in the bad weather may have lead to his death, but from the cause of death on the his death certificate I wouldn't think so.

Note from Vida Hale Pope - Grandma Coffman always claimed that God "told her things". She said that God told her that Evan (her grandson) was going to die while visting family in Kentucky. Evan did develop diphtheria and may have died from a reaction to the medience he was given. Grandma said nothing about this until years later.
