114 According to Perdita Williams book:
George Washington Musser once lived in Kentucky. Legend says that somewhere on the trip to Virginia, he swam a river with his wife on his back. This happened before Eugene was born.

Became a miller by trade and at one time operated the old Thompson Atkins mill near Atkins, VA

Enlisted in the Confederate States Army on September 4, 1861 at Marion, Virginia in Companny F, 23rd Batalion, Virginia Infantry under Captain W. H. McDonald. He enlisted to serve one year and was sent to Camp Jackson near Wytheville for training. He served immediately under Colonel Derrick and Captain J. C. Killinger. (Carl Wilson Musser, Sr.]

According to Virginia pension records and including F. S. Snavely's sworn affidavit in support of George Musser's claim to a pension as a Confederate veteran, George Musser, Sr., was wounded at the Battle of New Market, VA on May 15, 1864 and taken to the hospital at Staunton. [Carl Wilson Musser, Sr.] According to George Musser's own statment, he was then sent to the Confederate Hospital at Emory and Henry College. [Carl Wilson Musser, Sr.]

Deserted the confederate army after this convalesence and moved to Kentucky to avoid being punished by the "Confederate Police."
Probably in January, 1865 he was tracked down in Kentucky by the Confederate Police. He was able to escape being caught by going onto the roof of the house he and his wife were staying in. By the next morning they couple were across the Ohio River in the Union state of Ohio. His wife was probably 7-8 months pregnant at this time [Carl Wilson Musser, Sr].

Note from Vida Hale Pope

S/Sgt. Buck R Hale was working in the Norfolk shipyards when he was called to the service. His company offered to get him a deferment but he declined. Not wanting to have to kill anyone, he served as a medic. He arrived in Europe in the fall of 1944, just before the Battle of the Bulge. After the battle, his unit wound up in Holland where they hoped to get some rest. They had planned to sleep in a school, but the local towns people offered to house the men in their homes. S/Sgt Hale and two of his friends stayed with the Snyder family. Less than two weeks later he was killed. The Snyder family searched out his grave, took pictures and included them in a letter to his mother.

173 Aunt "Sis" was one of the most memorable members of the family. At the age of fourteen she became involved with David Sewell who was older and married at the time. Family stories say that in about 1902, her family sent her to Texas where some of her brothers and sisters lived. While there she went to college and taught school for awhile, but went back to Jonesville, VA by 1910. On the 1910 Lee County Census she was living with her sister and brother-in-law, Jessie and John Seabolt. After David Sewell's wife died in 1931, he and Maude were married, and he died in 1939. One family member, while doing research at the Lee County courthouse in Jonesville found a record of a license for a "house of body" issued to her. Unfortunately, I failed to get a date of the license and we can only assume what a "house of body" might have been. She was a spry, independent lady and operated a farm by herself. She was very outspoken and didn't take any nonsense from anybody. About 1950, a telephone operator was rude to her. She had her phone taken out and made the telephone company take all the telephone posts off her property. In 1952 she married Cam Newman, but they separated just a short time later. I don't believe they were divorced because she was listed as his widow in his obituary. When I was growing up I thought Aunt Sis was a very prim and proper lady and I, as well as my sisters, children, nieces, and cousins always enjoyed our visits with her. She always had good family stories and she had a trunk with all types of memorabilia from her parents, such as her mother's midwife kit and civil war items that belonged to her father. She lived alone until she died at the age of 93 years. DaVault, Maude Katherine (I2713)

180 Beatrice never thought about growing old. She was quick to smile as she looked you in the eyes and shook your hand. She had a happiness that was evident in her quick wit. Her curiosity was constantly awhirl as it varied from the life of Abraham Lincoln to current events or the rebirth of spring flowers. She was a member of the American Rosie The Riveter Association, having served on the World War II home front as a riveter for Goodyear Aircraft Corporation in Akron, Ohio. She later operated a drill press at Cadillac Motor Car in Detroit, Michigan. Eventually returning to Harlan, she became a meticulous bookkeeper for the Daniel Boone Clinic until she retired. After retirement, her love of learning, and ever-youthful outlook on life, led her to attend classes and earn her first Associates Degree from Southeast Community College in 1993. She counted walking across the stage to receive her degree as one of the proudest moments of her life. She continued to take classes, earning a second Associates Degree. Aside from her ongoing pursuit of higher education, she enjoyed caring for animals. She had a remarkable way of coaxing even the most timid dog to her side as she demonstrated an incredible devotion as a pet owner. She was a substitute teacher for many years, was a member of the Wallins Homemaker Club, and previously belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, Wallins #396. Most of all, she declared that she was a Christian, belonging to the Lord.

Preceding her in death were her parents Smith Marion and Emma Lewis Ball; maternal grandparents Carter and Mary Turner Lewis; paternal grandparents Allen and Ellender Jane Smith Ball; brothers Woodrow, Willard, and Creed Ball, half-brothers Dizney, Charlie, Carter, and Robert (Bob) Ball and half-sister Ethel Ball Gilbert, and husband John Samuel Ashurst.
