| 154 | Aunt "Sis" was one of the most memorable members of the family. At the age of fourteen she became involved with David Sewell who was older and married at the time. Family stories say that in about 1902, her family sent her to Texas where some of her brothers and sisters lived. While there she went to college and taught school for awhile, but went back to Jonesville, VA by 1910. On the 1910 Lee County Census she was living with her sister and brother-in-law, Jessie and John Seabolt. After David Sewell's wife died in 1931, he and Maude were married, and he died in 1939. One family member, while doing research at the Lee County courthouse in Jonesville found a record of a license for a "house of body" issued to her. Unfortunately, I failed to get a date of the license and we can only assume what a "house of body" might have been. She was a spry, independent lady and operated a farm by herself. She was very outspoken and didn't take any nonsense from anybody. About 1950, a telephone operator was rude to her. She had her phone taken out and made the telephone company take all the telephone posts off her property. In 1952 she married Cam Newman, but they separated just a short time later. I don't believe they were divorced because she was listed as his widow in his obituary. When I was growing up I thought Aunt Sis was a very prim and proper lady and I, as well as my sisters, children, nieces, and cousins always enjoyed our visits with her. She always had good family stories and she had a trunk with all types of memorabilia from her parents, such as her mother's midwife kit and civil war items that belonged to her father. She lived alone until she died at the age of 93 years. | DaVault, Maude Katherine (I2713)

| 161 | Beatrice never thought about growing old. She was quick to smile as she looked you in the eyes and shook your hand. She had a happiness that was evident in her quick wit. Her curiosity was constantly awhirl as it varied from the life of Abraham Lincoln to current events or the rebirth of spring flowers. She was a member of the American Rosie The Riveter Association, having served on the World War II home front as a riveter for Goodyear Aircraft Corporation in Akron, Ohio. She later operated a drill press at Cadillac Motor Car in Detroit, Michigan. Eventually returning to Harlan, she became a meticulous bookkeeper for the Daniel Boone Clinic until she retired. After retirement, her love of learning, and ever-youthful outlook on life, led her to attend classes and earn her first Associates Degree from Southeast Community College in 1993. She counted walking across the stage to receive her degree as one of the proudest moments of her life. She continued to take classes, earning a second Associates Degree. Aside from her ongoing pursuit of higher education, she enjoyed caring for animals. She had a remarkable way of coaxing even the most timid dog to her side as she demonstrated an incredible devotion as a pet owner. She was a substitute teacher for many years, was a member of the Wallins Homemaker Club, and previously belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, Wallins #396. Most of all, she declared that she was a Christian, belonging to the Lord. Preceding her in death were her parents Smith Marion and Emma Lewis Ball; maternal grandparents Carter and Mary Turner Lewis; paternal grandparents Allen and Ellender Jane Smith Ball; brothers Woodrow, Willard, and Creed Ball, half-brothers Dizney, Charlie, Carter, and Robert (Bob) Ball and half-sister Ethel Ball Gilbert, and husband John Samuel Ashurst. | Ball, Beatrice (I1365)

| 182 | Billie Ridings (henceforth referred to as Grammy), of Georgetown, Indiana, went to be with her savior on December 26, 2022. She was born in a small house in Dryden, Virginia an hour before her twin, Bobbie, arrived. Grammy was a gentle hair-brusher, a pumpkin bread baker, a child whisperer, a snake despiser, a Diet Coke drinker, a hummingbird watcher, an avid phone talker, a bible reader who prayed for her family daily, and a loving mother and grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved in that way that we all look for: She knew us and saw us for what we are but she loved us and told us that we were still worthy. Grammy was a light. You could not go to Kroger without running into 5 people she knew and chances were she had pictures of their children from every grade of school in her drawer upstairs. She cared that your child was running a fever and she would wait for you to call her and tell her it was just strep and you were on your way to get the antibiotic now but, wow, he weighs 63 pounds now, can you believe that (she couldn’t, just like you couldn’t, and together you swear 5 minutes ago he was a baby). She called you to let you know she was dropping off pumpkin bread, charioted by one of her children. She had just baked it this morning and she knew how much you’d want some. By the way, she was bringing the kids Happy Meals, too, and an Oreo McFlurry for each. But, wait now, don’t think she was a pushover. She was fierce and sassy in a way we could not always predict. She once got so mad she poured out an entire gallon of Kool-Aid while looking someone dead in the eye. She would use terms that were both inappropriate for the reader and also a bit confusing in their combination. And sometimes she would get so mad she would cry. Even in that she taught us, too, to sit with someone while they cry without offering answers or remedies but just a hand on the back and a reassurance that we aren’t alone. Grammy was inimitable. In her memory, wait for the dogwoods to bloom. Listen to a child talk about Minecraft. Play “Mr. Blue Sky” and clap slightly off beat. Eat a McDonald’s cheeseburger and learn the name and story of the person who handed it to you through the drive thru window. Watch an old musical. Read an Agatha Christie novel. Offer understanding. Make the world a more loving and beautiful place. Grammy is survived by her 3 children, April (Doug) Elmore, Steven (Kim) Ridings, and Mark (Amanda) Ridings: her 10 grandchildren, Samantha (Tony) Condra, Alicia (Matt) Young, Arielle (Noah) Ivey, Megan Elmore, Taylor (Brandon) Perez, Ian Elmore, Ethan Ridings, Seth Ridings, Claire Elmore, and Ziva Ridings; and 10 great-grandchildren, and every single person who she accepted as another grandchild along the way; her twin sister, Bobbie Winters, and her older sister, Carol (Carmine) Artone. She was preceded in death by her father, Estle Huff; her mother, Inez Huff; and her sister, Margaret Doss. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org A burial will follow the service in Kraft-Graceland Cemetery. She will see you later, Alligator. | Huff, Billie Geneta (I46)

| 235 | Brenda Lynn Ridings April 17, 1957 - May 11, 2021 Brenda Lynn (Reams) Ridings, age 64, of London, Kentucky, passed away at St. Joseph Hospital on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. She was the third child of Roscoe Burton Reams and Pearl Joyce Reams. She was the wife of James A. "Jim" Ridings. Brenda and Jim had been married to each other for almost thirty-six years. Her loving husband, Jim, survives her. Brenda is survived by her children, James Milby "Jay" (Kelly) Ridings, Jennifer Lynn Chandler, and Leigh Elizabeth Ridings (husband Blake Martin), and by two wonderful grandsons, James Maddox Ridings and Logan Ridings Martin. She is also survived by her father, Roscoe Burton Reams, and by three sisters, Vivian (Tony) Henson, Sandra (Mitch) Goodin, and Carolyn (Hoss-deceased) Ward. Brenda was preceded in death by her mother, Pearl Joyce Reams, and her brother, Randall Sherman Reams. Some of Brenda's greatest pleasures were her flowers and vegetable gardens which she planted around her house every Spring. Her family and friends loved to come to Brenda's home to admire the vast amount of colorful and beautiful flowers she raised and to commune on the back patio among the flowers for cook-outs. Brenda was a long-time member of First Christian Church in London Kentucky, and she served on the Board as a Deacon. She worked as a legal administrative assistant for her husband, Jim. She was known among her church family and work family and others for her excellent cooking, and always took pride in preparing food with meticulous detail – her world's best cheesecake being a prime example. For decades, Brenda would make a birthday dessert for each of her co-workers on their birthdays. Friends and family frequently contacted her with a specific dessert request for all kinds of occasions each year. Brenda also loved travelling – often locally. She enjoyed exploring Laurel County and other Eastern Kentucky counties. She would visit the Smoky Mountains every chance she could, and she had standby favorite locations she wanted to see on each trip. Another of her joys was frequently travelling to South Carolina to gather with her immediate family to reconnect, and when she could persuade us, to play games late into the night. Brenda's primary focus in life was her family, and she was undoubtedly the best mother and "Gam Gam" that anyone could ever hope for. She devoted herself unselfishly and with the greatest of energy to raising her three children and taking care of her husband. She eagerly looked forward to every minute she could spend with her children and with her grandsons, Maddox and Logan. Brenda truly saw the best in everyone and made a positive impact on every person she met; her contagious smile will be remembered by so many. | Reams, Brenda Lynn (I4287)
