She was born August 19, 1930 in Union County, TN to the late L.H. and Hattie (Walker) Keck. On November 22, 1947 she married Robert "Pat" Collins. Hilda was a homemaker and a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Sandusky, OH. She did a lot of volunteer work, could make a sewing machine sing, and was a great cook. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Foister, Ed, Paris, Dave, Jim, and Lee Keck; and sisters: Pheonie Rouse and Bertha Cole. He was born on February 20, 1936 to Andrew and Goldie (Parsons) in Keokee, Virginia. Hobert proudly served in the United States Army. He was a supervisor at National Power Flow in Elwood, Indiana for 33 years. After retiring, Hobert worked for the Noblesville School System. His hobby was a perfectionist wood craftsman. He is survived by his daughters, Rita (Mark) Livesay and Dawn (Roger) Rausch; son, Dennis Ridings; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. 2923 | It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Helen Lael Ellison Carpenter. She passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, April 19, 2023 at Blount Memorial Hospital after a long but courageous battle with health problems. She was 82 years old. She was born on April 14, 1941 in Blount County to Jeff (Big Racket) and Lela Ellison. She graduated from Everett High School in 1959. Helen married the love of her life, Junior Odell Carpenter on April 29, 1960. They lived in Blount County the 63 years of their busy but exciting lives together traveling many places until her health declined. She was a devoted wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who blessed all her family and many, many friends with her compassion, selflessness and concern for others which influenced the lives of all she met. She was called “Aunt Hellie” by her nieces and nephews and many people who learned about this would say I wish I had an “Aunt Hellie.” Do you think she would adopt me? Her heart was so big. She was a generous, supportive and encouraging to all whose path crossed hers. She also joined the Order of the Eastern Star, Mary Blount Chapter in the 1960’s. She was very active and supporting, serving as worthy matron, secretary, and different star points. She and her husband attended Grand Chapter different times and she visited other OES chapters in Blount and Knox Counties filling in often to help and serve others. She has remained a member for over 50 years. She was saved at an early age, joined Brantley’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church in 1953 where she remained a faithful member for 70 years, often serving as pianist. She graduated Fort Sanders School of Nursing in 1964. As a senior, she was voted most professional. She joined the staff at Blount Memorial Hospital as a registered nurse soon after. She was well known for her excellent nursing skills and very respected by her coworkers and patients. She retired in 2007 after a total of 41 years of service. The last 17 years she worked in occupational health at the Aluminum Company of America in Alcoa. The former years she was in house at Blount Memorial Hospital, well known for her excellent emergency room skills. She had a greeting card ministry, sending love, greetings, concern and well wishes to hundreds of people over more than 20 years. Her cards were filled with beautiful stickers, even the envelopes, to add her special touch. Cards were sent for every occasion to a big list of lucky recipients. And people responded by sending their love and well wishes back to her. All were blessed. Helen was preceded in death by her father and mother, Jeff and Lela Mae Sharp Ellison and her infant sister, Rebecca. She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Junior Odell Carpenter; sister, Brenda Adams (Lawrence); brothers, James “Jim” Ellison (Charlotte) and Vonzel Whetzel (Virgie); nephews, Michael Adams (Becky), Shane Ellison (Karen); nieces Kim Ellison Clabo (Andy), Stephanie Adams, Allison Tipton; great nieces, Taylor Clabo, Emily Adams, Megan Adams, Savannah Jack, Meghan Jack, Isabella Ellison Olivia Ellison; great nephews, Ryan Adams, Drew Clabo, Peyton Ellison. Wilma was born on April 21, 1933, in Sharps Chapel, Tennessee, to Ernest Verlin Tolliver and Minnie Viola (Patton) Tolliver. Wilma attended Powell Valley High School and graduated in 1951. Wilma worked for several years as a teacher's aid at Ellen Meyers Elementary School, a seamstress at the LaFollette Shirt Factory, operated Sowders Trailer Park with her late husband, Homer Henry Sowders, and worked at Mason's Florist. Wilma was a long-time member of Gap Creek Baptist Church of Arthur, TN. Wilma was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Wilma is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings: Rodger Willis Tolliver, Ruby Mildred Tolliver-Brooks, and James Walter Tolliver. Jack spent 10 years serving in the National Guard in Maryland and Illinois. He was a retired over the road truck driver and instructor, known by his CB handle as, “Smiling Jack.” He also worked as an EMT for Jonesville, Pennington Gap and St. Charles Rescue Squad. Jack was a family man and was an excellent husband, father and papaw. He helped numerous people in his community and was loved by many. Jack loved Bluegrass music and a good laugh. He loved attending the Message of Truth and Grace Fellowship Churches. Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Mossie Ridings Collins. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lydia Collins; two daughters, Theresa G. Collins Clark and Nicole Bowles (James); one son, Jack Collins, Jr. (Nichole); one sister, Wilma Joyce Leonard (Raven); two brothers, Robert Collins (Janet) and Curtis Collins; eight grandchildren, Jared Collins and fiancé, Samantha Stallard, Hillary Collins, Dalton Clark, Tate Bowles, Taylor Bowles, Kayden Collins, Sidney Collins and Olivia Bowles; and one great grandchild, Kaysen Ryan Collins. She was also a former volunteer at Colonial Oaks Health Care Center. She was a member of Grace Community Church, Marion. 2929 | James “Jim” Doyle, 76, of Springfield passed away on February 24, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center. Jim was born December 22, 1941 in Carrollton, IL, the only child of the late Raymond Ellis Doyle and Mary Aileen Koehm Doyle. He married Martha “Marti” Maddox on April 2, 1982. Jim was a field engineer for NCR Corporation for almost 40 years. He was a member of First Christian Church for over 50 years. He is a former volunteer for the Sangamon County Rescue Squad. He built and flew his own airplane and was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He was also a member of the Lincoln Land British Car Club and The Mild Hogs motorcycle club. Jim had many interests and hobbies, including restoring antique cars and motorcycles. He was devoted to his family. Jim is survived by his wife, Marti; daughter Bonnie (Todd) Kennedy of Springfield; sons Michael (Dianna) Doyle of St. Charles, MO, Terry (Paris) Doyle of Chatham and Kevin (Savanna) Doyle of Wheaton; and grandchildren Chad Kennedy, Kristen Kennedy and Kaiden Doyle. He is also survived by his uncles Roy Koehm of Greenfield and George Koehm of Seal Beach, CA; and several cousins. He had been a patient there a week, after being moved from Smith-Everett Hospital. Born Aug. 10, 1886, in Woodbine, Ky., Mr. Rhea was a son of the late William D. and Nancy M. Green Rhea. He moved to Portsmouth in 1933, and had been a West Portsmouth resident for 15 years. Mr. Rhea married the former Grace Ratliff at Greenup, Oct. 27, 1922. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, John Franklin of Chicago, Charles Robert and James David, both at home; a sister, Mrs. Rosie Lowe of Corbin, Ky.; and 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 2931 | James Alexandar Pickle was born June 11, 1908 in Smyth County, Groseclose, VA. He was the 4th child of six children, born to Charles Wiley & Dona Theodosia Yonts Pickle. He came to his Uncle John Yonts of rural Moorhead, when he was about 19 years old, because he didn't want to be a "gandy dancer" on the railroads. He met Irene Berg while she was teaching at the Sunny Slope School in Sec. 25 of Spring Valley Twp., that John Yonts children attended. They were married on February 28, 1934. They had one child, Jerald Alan Pickle born March 12, 1936 at Ute, Iowa. Through the years, Jim and Irene farmed near near Soldier, Pisgah, and the Soldier Country Church. 2938 | James T. Ridings, 73, of White Hall, passed away Saturday, Oct, 18, 2008, at his residence. Born in White Hall on Feb. 19, 1935, he was the son of the late Jesse Thomas and Blanche L. Cain Ridings. On June 7, 1958, he married the former Helen Jean Capps and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Bob (companion, Wendy) Ridings of White Hall; a daughter, Sarah (husband, Eric) Heikes of Petersburg; three grandchildren, Jessica Ridings of Roodhouse and Katie and Will Heikes of Petersburg; a niece, Jane Ganyard of Dahlonega, Ga.; an aunt, Elsie Geers of White Hall; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Edward Ridings. Mr. Ridings attended Maple Grove Country Grade School, was a graduate of White Hall High School class of 1952 and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1957-1963. He was an honorary member of the White Hall Lions Club. He was former member of the North Greene School Board. Jim built many unique items including the White Hall City Council desk, a trophy case for North Greene High School and a showcase for Boyd Memorial Hospital. He had a tremendous gift for woodworking. He restored many antique pieces of furniture in the community. He enjoyed working with livestock and attending livestock sales at Woodson, attending lunches with his buddies and "loafing" at the White Hall F.S. with his friends. 2939 | JAMES TILLER Funeral services for James Tiller, 76, resident of Rock Springs for 30 years, were held Monday at the Rogan mortuary chapel. Bishop William Gibbs of the L.D.S. church conducted the rites and burial was in Mountain View cemetery. Pallbearers were David Dillon of Green River, Aaron Deneley Sr., Louis Hunt, Grover Logan and James and William Uranker, all of Rock Springs. Mr. Tiller died Friday, December 28, in Sweetwater Memorial hospital. A heart attack caused his death and he had been seriously ill for 12 days. Born July 7, 1880 in Ashland, Ky., Mr. Tiller came to Rock Springs in 1926. He was married to Emma Grindle, sister of Fred Grindle of Rock Springs, Jan. 12, 1903 in Macon, Mo., and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in Rock Springs in 1953. Survivors are his widow of 811 Center street, two sons, Clarence and William Tiller, both of Rock Springs; one daughter, Mrs. Irene Williams of Macon, Mo.; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Except for a short time after their marriage Larry and Janice lived in Jesup. Janice worked 20 years at Schares Grocery Store, and also over 20 years at the Buchanan County Courthouse in the Clerk of Court office. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jesup. She was a graduate of Lynn View High School, and Lincoln Memorial University where she graduated in 1963 with a B.A. in English. Mrs. Moore was retired from the Lee County School Board. She taught English at Pennington High School and at Lee High. She volunteered for the Ladies Auxillary at Lee Regional Hospital. She was a member of The First Christian Church in Pennington Gap. Jean enjoyed teaching her many students in English and Journalism, traveling with friends, and cheering for the University of Tennessee Big Orange. She was preceded in death by her husband Ronald L. Moore in 2007. She is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Todd Moore of Gray, TN, Anthony Lee Moore of Pennington Gap, VA. One brother, W.O. Dishner, Jr. of Gray, TN. 2944 | Jeffrey A. Baker, age 67, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023 in his home. Jeffrey was born on December 10, 1954 in Muncie, Indiana, the son of the late John and Ruth (Everett) Baker. He married Kimberly Sprinkle on April 3, 1976 and they shared 45 years of marriage together before her death on May 16, 2021. Jeffrey worked in production at Active Products in Marion for over 20 years, and then at Atlas Foundry until his retirement. Jeffrey is survived by two sons, Jason Baker (Michele) of Ohio and Ryan Baker (Mandy) of Marion; a sister, Phyllis Vargo (Jim) of Schererville, Indiana; and grandchildren, Nolan, Trevor, Kylee, Dylan and Alyssa Baker. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Linda Sherrick. He enjoyed going to the Ducktail Run with his 1972 Ford LTD Convertible. He was also an avid NASCAR fan especially of driver Chase Elliott, and loved watching Indiana Hoosiers Basketball.
