| 3439 | Leamon "Lee" Willard Covington passed away on Thursday, June 27th, at his home after complications from his latest fall. He was born December 10, 1925 to Delbert and Mary (Parker) Covington in Laurel County, KY. He grew up in the Depression, helped build a bridge in the CCC, and then served in the Army in WWII. He moved to Richmond in the 50s. After working at Johns-Manville for 33 years he began his second longest job of 31 years retirement. He was a very strong, disciplined man who never thought he was old until his second bout with cancer last year. He always had at least one thing planned to accomplish each day. His neighbors knew that little old man was either working or "resting" on his porch. His neighbors were some of his best friends. He made walking sticks for many friends and family. He loved riding motorcycles for over 65 years and survived two wrecks at the ages of 79 and 89. He kept riding, reasoning that it was rare for anyone to have three motorcycle wrecks. His last ride was on Memorial Day. He took up bicycle riding in his 80s and rode around the half mile block in his neighborhood daily. One year he rode over 3300 miles, more than he drove his car. He competed in a 12 mile bicycle time trial when he was 86. One neighbor said he was the energizer bunny. That was our dad and Papa. He was most proud of his family and enjoyed their love. His daughter and best friend, Denise, doted on him in his 90s and made sure he was cared for and never lonely for long. Special gratitude to Reid Radiology, Shelly, and Vernie for giving him two more quality years of life and bringing many smiles to his face. Many thanks to the caring people at Reid Hospice for enabling him to pass peacefully in his home. Survivors include two sisters, Mary Rose Boggs of Mooresville, and Joyce Dawson of Kentucky, son Dwuane (Lynetta) Covington of Richmond, son Bob (Jenni) Covington, and daughter Denise Covington, both of Centerville and son-in-law DeWayne (Susan) Taylor of Parker City. Grandchildren: Danyel (Brian) Rostad of Pennsylvania, Hunter (Stacy) Covington of Studio City, CA, Justin (Sabrina) Phenis and Lyndsey Phenis of Richmond, Casey (Eric) Vincent of Greenfield, Dana (Ronnie) Younger of Richmond, and Bobbi (Michael) Kerney of Richmond, Robin (Scott) Kerney, and Jamie (Scott) Runyon all of Centerville. He also had many great and great-great grandchildren from our blended families. Many nieces and nephews including special nieces Carol Shook and Sandra Henrie of Utah. He leaves also his WWII Army buddy, Ed Coomer. He was preceded in death by his parents, 13 siblings, son Darrel Lee Covington (USMC-killed in combat-Vietnam), daughter Jowana Diane Taylor, grandson Michael Taylor, and former wives Mary Helen Covington and Ruby Covington. Services will be 3:00PM Sunday June 30, 2019 at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home with Rev. Charlie Black officiating; burial will be at Goshen Cemetery. | Covington, Leamon Willard (I5860)

| 3441 | Lee Thomas "Tom" Mills Lexington, Kentucky September 8, 1930 - September 5, 2023 Lee Thomas "Tom" Mills, 92, was born on September 8, 1930, in Pineville, Kentucky, to Ross C. and Necie Viola Mills. He passed away on September 5, 2023. Tom is reunited in heaven with his high school sweetheart, beloved wife and soulmate of 66 years, Betty Lee Howard Mills. He was also preceded in death by his parents, four brothers (Paul, Ross, Bob, and Stacy Mills) and his sister (Ruth Mills Azbill). He leaves his four children: Thomas Alan Mills; Randy (Emily) Mills; Jennifer Mills Andes (Rusty); and David (Mendy) Mills. Left also are eleven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Ralph and Bill Mills, and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Tom received his first experience with athletics while playing for Pineville High School under the direction of Coach Lloyd Patterson. A terrific athlete, he played football and basketball, was awarded the coveted Junior Athletic Cup and selected as football team captain. Tom served his country in the U.S. Navy for four years, followed by his enrollment at Eastern Kentucky University where he earned degrees in History and Physical Education as well as Masters and Rank I degrees, and an advanced degree in School Administration. He was selected as a member in the inaugural class of EKU's 100 Most Outstanding Alumni in 1974. He began his career in education as a teacher and two years undefeated, championship football coach at Perryville High School. He was later inducted into the Boyle County High School Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He served principalships at Stanford, Harlan and Frankfort High Schools. After a four-year stint as superintendent of the Frankfort City Schools, he was chosen as Assistant Commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association in 1972. He was appointed as the KHSAA's third Commissioner in 1975 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1991. During his 16-year tenure as KHSAA Commissioner, the state of Kentucky developed one of the most revered high school athletics programs in America. Under his guidance, the sports of girls' basketball, volleyball, and fast-pitch softball, as well as boys' and girls' soccer were implemented as KHSAA-sanctioned activities. He envisioned and initiated catastrophic insurance coverage for all high school athletes, cheerleaders and band members. Target, a drug awareness program, was established in grades 5-12. Along with Governor Martha Layne Collins, he was instrumental in the founding of the Bluegrass State Games. In 1988, his dream became a reality when the Dawahare's KHSAA Hall of Fame and Museum was founded. He developed the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Academic Scholarship awards and conceptualized and oversaw the construction of splendid new KHSAA offices. He accepted his place in the prestigious Dawahare's KHSAA Hall of Fame in 1992. Tom and wife Betty never forgot their roots in Pineville. They maintained a lifelong love of and support for their hometown. Tom served on the Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival Board of Directors for over forty years, including roles as President, Grand Marshal and as chair of the KMLF Board of Directors Nominating Committee, a position he held for over twenty years. He was inducted into the KMLF Hall of Fame in 1994. Forever a Pineville Mountain Lion at heart, he was inducted into the Pineville Schools Hall of Fame in 2013. Above all, was his commitment to his Christian faith and to his family. His exemplary role model lives through his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The grandchildren adored him; he remains unmatched as the best bed-time storyteller of all-time. Indeed, his most cherished titles were those of Dad and Grandpa. Whether performing magic tricks for the children or showering special attention on the babies, he truly valued every second of family time. In his later years, he received joy from drives through horse country, especially from visits to his precious Faybon Farm to see the thoroughbreds run. Taken together, his accomplishments represent the vision of a special kid off Breastwork Hill in Pineville, Kentucky, who saw what needed to be done and then went out and made it happen. His impact on the lives of countless student athletes continues beyond what anyone could have imagined. Tom's sense of fair play, his conscientious interpretation of the rules, administrative ability and vision for the future, leave a positive mark on every playing field and court throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky that continues to ripple to this very day. | Mills, Lee Thomas (I5864)

Remember my spirit, that is the real me because I'm still very much alive, I've just been set free. Oh, if you could only see! I have held our Father's face and I've touched my Savior's hand. All of Heaven's angels rejoiced as I entered the promised land. Beyond the gates of pearl I've walked on the golden streets. I've touched the walls of jasper and dipped my foot in the crystal sea. The beauty is beyond words and nothing could compare, I've even seen our Lords mansion and someday I'll meet you there. Let Jesus be your guide because "His Word" will show you the way. So please don't cry because we will meet again someday. | Sears, Lena F. (I2887)

| 3448 | Leona's obit lists the children of John Marsee and Nancy Turner as her bros. and sisters These names appear on the 1930 Bell Co KY census. Per Loretta Lovett, Leona first child died at birth or shortly after. Note from Mary Brown... Leona Lovett always wore dresses or skirts and blouses. She never wore pants or slacks. She thought it was a sin to wear them. She was 5' 7" and weight about 165 lbs. She had dark curly hair and blue eyes. A really pretty lady. She was a hard worker, keeping house, gardening, and canning the vegetables for her family. She made her own jams and jellies. She was a good cook and seemed to enjoy doing it. Every night she would tell us stories about the family. She believed family history should be passed down from one generation to the next generation. Most of her stories involved the Turner family. We used to visit Middlesboro, Bell Co KY. She showed me where my Turner family were buried...back to my 7th great-grandparents, John and Elizabeth Marsee Turner. They are buried in the 'Old Turner Cemetery, on 34th street in Middlesboro,KY. Across the street and back in the field...going south...was where John and Elizabeth raised their family. Leona showed me what was left of their home. There was only a foundation left, in 1950. The foundation was built from field stones. You could still see part of the path leading up to where their front door was. Someone had craved inititials in some of the field stones. They were boy + girlfriend type initials. In the field on some of the trees were these same type initials. I can't remember the letters in the initials...so I don't know if the initials were put there by John and Elizabeth's children...or perhaps by other people... later on through the years after John and Elizabeth died. | Ridings, Leona Retta (I204)

| 3455 | Lexington Intelligencer, December 23, 1905 Death of Dr. P.S. Fulkerson Died, after a brief illness at his home near Central College in this city, Saturday afternoon, Dec. 16, Dr. P.S. Fulkerson, aged nearly 79 years. He had been in a bad state of health for two months but not such as seriously to interrupt the practice of his profession until about two weeks before his death. Uremic poisoning developed and after four days confinement to bed he passed away. Putman Smith Fulkerson, eldest son of Jacob V. and Catherine Ewing Fulkerson was born near Stickleyville, Lee county Virginia, Jan. 20, 1827. He was the second of a family of eleven children, of whom four survive: Mrs. Margaret Lyons, of Kentucky; Mrs. Ellen Frick, of Kansas City; Mrs. Emma Reeder, of Batesville, Arkansas; and Dr. J.J. Fulkerson, of this city. Of the other brothers and sisters, now dead, two had lived in Missouri: Dr. Albert Fulkerson, who died in this city about eighteen months ago, and James P. Fulkerson, who lived in this county for two years just before the war between the states. Dr. Fulkerson came to this county from Virginia in 1847 and commenced the practice of his profession on Texas Prairie, making his home with "Squire" Walton, at that time one of the most widely known men in Western Missouri. He had previously studied medicine for six years with his uncle, James P. Fulkerson, and had attended lectures in one of the medical colleges of Louisville, Ky. After practicing for several years in this state he went to Philadelphia where he took the post graduate course in the Jefferson Medical College, finishing in 1854. Returning to Missouri he located at Chapel Hill, then a flourishing seat of education. Dr. Fulkerson was practicing medicine at Chapel Hill while Francis M. Cockrell was teaching in Chapel Hill College, and here began a friendship which lasted until death. When the war came Dr. Fulkerson, who was never lukewarm in anything, heartily espoused the cause of the South and served through the struggle as surgeon of Shelby's brigade. Returning to this county at the close of the war he located at Wellington; and in 1867---Oct. 15---he was married to Miss Mary Jane Ridings, daughter of Thomas Wentworth Ridings, of Wellington, who survives. Of their four children only one is living, Miss Katherine C. Fulkerson, of this city. Dr. Emmett Fulkerson died Nov. 16, of this year, just one month before his father. Archibald Fulkerson, the second son, died Jan. 1898. The second daughter died in infancy. In 1876 Dr. Fulkerson was elected to the office of county collector, ??? office be filled two terms. He ??? to Lexington with his family in ??? year and conducted his office ??? through deputies without ??? interruption to his professional ???. In 1884 he was appointed postmaster of Lexington during the first Cleveland administration. This office, too, was efficiently conducted though deputies. He had no desire, nor was it possible for his, to get away from a professional practice which for more than fifty years taxed his physical strength to the utmost. He was president of the County Medical Society from its reorganization to the time of his death. He was more than once president of the District Medical Society of Kansas City, and several times vice president of the State Society, before which he was often appointed to read papers upon medical subjects. | Fulkerson, Dr. Putnam Smith (I5308)

| 3460 | Life Story The following is shared by the oldest grandson of Mary Alta (Roney) Cowherd from an email that Lloyd N. Cowherd wrote: "My grandmother Mary Alta Roney Cowherd had a younger, wilder, sister named Effa Toma Roney, who at age 16, ran off with a drummer (traveling salesman, employer unkown). No marriage has been found. She later wrote to her favorite sister Mary, that she lived in Rand, CO, and was married to a wealthy rancher named Henning J. Peterson. After his death she lived in a relatively small cabin in Rand, which is near the Wyoming border about half way across Colorado, in a wide valley between two large mountain ranges. When we visited her in 1948, she banished her live-in hired hand to a smaller furnished cabin in the back yard, while we were there. She later married him and became Mrs. Troy Ridings. After she was again widowed, Barbara and I stopped by her cabin in 1978 and she was just coming out of the smaller cabin covered with blood, from butchering a deer she had shot up in the Rabbit Ears Range of mountains south of her home. She announced that she had, for the first time in her life, purchased a license, then went hunting, shot the deer, field dressed it, hung it in a tree to cool, and the following day, had driven her old jeep to get it. She offered us tea, after I had explained that our last meeting had been while we were in Colorado in 1948. I was impressed by her activite life at age 87. We moved on to Denver, Colorado Springs, and into New Mexico, before diverting eastward to Texas, and then stopped with another of my grandmother's sisters, Martha Mary Roney, who had married Homer Samuel Hawkins, formerly of Norborne, MO, who had made a fortune growing wheat in the boom times after World War I, near Texoma, on the Oklahoma panhandle, Texas panhandle, border. He lost all of his land during the Depression, managing only to keep the taxes paid on one section (640 acres) of practically worthless land. Before 1940 and so before World War II, oil was struck on his worthless land, and he was suddenly back in the wheat growing business, making a very comfortable living during that war. Another sister had married a man, George Garnier, who took over the gravestone business in Kansas City, Kansas, after the father Benjamin Franklin Roney, sold his land in Fairfield Township, and invested in making tombstones. There were other sisters and a brother. Their mother was Emma (Petty) Roney." | Roney, Effa I (I4772)
