3702 | WEYER JOHN SHELTON of New Market, TN, lifelong farmer and consummate gentleman, passed away at the age of 88 on Thursday, September 20, 2012. He was born in Claiborne County, TN and spent his childhood years with eleven brothers and sisters on the family farm in the Straight Creek community. The family moved to New Market when Norris Lake was created, flooding their land in Claiborne County. Weyer spent the remainder of his life in New Market, where he operated a dairy farm and raised tobacco for most of those years. More recently, up until his passing, he managed several large chicken houses and raised beef cattle. He served as a Jefferson County Commissioner and was a Soil Conservation District Farmer of the Year. He was a member of Nance's Grove Baptist Church in New Market. He was predeceased by his parents, Jake Shelton and Isabel Keck Shelton, and by his wife, Dena Burchell Shelton. He was also preceded in death by one infant child (Edward Shelton); brothers Cleopas, Oaty, White, Carl and Roy Shelton; sisters Lora Mathews, Louda Bender, Noma Paladino, Vernetta Caruso and Georgia Collins. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jo Anne and James Medlin of Kingsport; daughter, Mary Rose Shelton; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Sharon Shelton, and son, Bobby Shelton, all of New Market; sister, Lenoir Musser of Talbott; grandchildren, Scott, Matthew and Jonathan Shelton, Jenna Clingner, Mark and Will Medlin; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Metcalf was born February 17, 1930, in Long Lane, the daughter of Virgil and Amzelle Wilson Hale. She worked on a dairy farm and was a Baptist. She married Clinton Metcalf on November 24, 1950, in Phoenix, Arizona, and he preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Jump of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one son, Stephen Metcalf of Springfield; two sisters, Nollie Seitz and Carol Wilson; three grandchildren, one great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Hale. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home in Aurora with Chaplain Jack Betts and Rev. 3713 | William Bates, 78-year-old Grundy farmer, died suddenly last Thursday at his home. The son of the late James J. and Rebecca Ridings Bates, he was born October 2, 1879, in Grundy. He married Mabel James on October 1, 1905, and two children were born to this marriage. Mrs. Bates and one child preceded him in death. Mr. Bates married Olga Placke on August 18, 1913, and 13 children blessed this union. While still a young man, Mr. Bates professed his faith in Christ and united with the Rock Lick Baptist Church. He remained a devout member of that church all his life. Mr. Bates is survived by his wife; seven daughters, Mrs. Wilson Bobbitt, Mark, Mrs. Joe Cundiff, Sugar Hill, Mrs. Erwin Callahan, Science Hill, Mrs. Ernest Kuhnapfel and Mrs. Jack Lee, both of Somerset, Mrs. James Sowder, Cincinnati, and Mrs. J.W. 3717 | William Lee "Bill" Cowsill, 95 of Pittsburg, KS died Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at the Oakview Estates in Frontenac. He was born May 13, 1919, in Pittsburg the son of William and Rose Lee (Musser) Cowsill. On Jan. 8, 1940 he was united in marriage to Carolina Battitori in Webb City, MO. She preceded him in death on May 6, 1976. He then married Rosalie M. Ryan on Sept. 4, 1976. She preceded him in death on June 3, 2005. He was an Army veteran of WWII enlisting June 16, 1944 and was honorably discharged Nov. 19, 1945. He attained the rank of Private 1st Class and was attached to the 341st Ordinance Depot Co. in the Philippine Islands. William worked for Spencer Chemical/Gulf Oil Company as a maintenance mechanic for heavy equipment and locomotives. He retired in 1981 after 33 years of service. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #64 in Pittsburg. Survivors include a daughter Glenda (Paul) Uttley, of Frontenac; a son, William F. (Sandy) Cowsill, of Wichita, KS, three step-children: Bill (Christine) Ryan of Maynard, MA, Becky (Ray) Ross of Overland Park, KS and Ed (Laura) Ryan of St. Louis, MO, along with 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, both spouses, a son Charles L. Cowsill, step-father James C. Cowen, and a great grandson Jacob Shafer. Mr. Ridings was born Aug. 23, 1868, at Scotchgove, Iowa, the son of James and Charlotte Ridings. He came to Kansas when 16 years of age, living in Abilene. He followed residence in Abilene with a move to Sumner county. In 1903 he moved from Sumner county to Dexter and from Dexter he moved to Winfield in 1929. He was married on Feb. 12, 1907, to Frances Elizabeth Seaton, who died on March 13, 1954. Mr. Ridings was a member of the Baptist church. He was the last of nine children. 3725 | Woodrow "Woody" Bates, 67 years of age, of Louisville, Kentucky, departed this life on Saturday, June 9th, 1984 at the Methodist Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. Woody was born in Somerset, Kentucky on March 3rd, 1917, son of James and Bertha Sears Bates. He was a retired worker for the Sealtest Milk Company where he had been employed for 40 years. He was also a musician and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Woody was survived by his parents, James and Bertha Bates; his loving wife, Christine John Bates; two sons, Kenneth W. Bates of Louisville, Kentucky and James Woodrow Bates of Somerset, Kentucky; three sisters, Maxine Dorf of Washington, D.C., Jean McCracken of Lexington, Kentucky, and Lena Garner of Murryville, Tennessee; three grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends who mourn his passing. Visitations were held all day on Monday, June 11th, 1984 at the Ratterman Funeral Home in Louisville, Kentucky and again on Tuesday, June 12th at the Rock Lick Baptist Church in Somerset, Kentucky until time of funeral services. 3728 | WOODVILLE - Mary Frances Hanna Bates, 86, long-time resident of Kerrville, passed from this life on Thursday, July 20, 2006, in Woodville, Texas, at a care center. Born in Paris, Texas, she spent most of her childhood years in North Texas, and then later the Rio Grande Valley. She graduated from Rio Hondo High School and attended college at Kilgore Junior College. She married Russell Richmon Bates in 1939. Her career included employment with Sears Roebuck and Co. in both Harlingen, Texas, and Kerrville, Texas, as well as Chas. Schreiner Bank. She was manager of Sears Catalog Sales office in Kerrville for a number of years. She was an active member of the Kerrville Church of Christ for many years, and also with the Livingston Church of Christ in later years. She enjoyed doing volunteer services for the Medina Children's Home, making visits and telephone calls, sewing, baking and traveling. She was preceded in death by Russell Bates, to whom she was married 43 years. She is survived by three children, Belva Bellcock of Searcy, Ark., Garon Bates of Livingston, Texas, and Loretta Derrick of League City, Texas; brother, James E. Hanna of Katy, Texas; two sisters, Elizabeth Sottosanti of Kerrville, Texas, and Margaret Clark of Midlothian, Texas; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, along with a host of loving friends and neighbors. She was dearly loved by both sides of the extended family. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Kerrville Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 24, 2006, in the Chapel of Kerrville Funeral Home, with interment following at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville. 3735 | ZORA HOWELL (1908-1998) Zora B. Howell Plummer, 90, of Portsmouth, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, at a Russell, Ky., hospital. She was born March 21, 1908, in Lewis County, Ky., a daughter of the late Henry Howell and Rachael Kegley Howell. She was retired from the former Williams Manufacturing Company, was a member of Cedar Street Church of Christ in Christian Union of New Boston, and a member of Eagles Lodge of New Boston and Moose Lodge of Portsmouth. Surviving are one son, William Plummer of Portsmouth; one daughter, Ruth Arrowood of Portsmouth; one brother, Fred Howell of Portsmouth; one sister, Blanche Leonard of Freemont; 23 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by two sons, Don and John Plummer; five brothers and one sister. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore, Ky., with the Rev. Quentin King officiating, and interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Franklin Furnace.
