He had made his home in Norfolk, VA with his wife and best friend of 28 years Linda Hardin; two loving daughters, Kim (Jamie) Meharg and Denise Conrad; two beautiful grandchildren Brayden and Alyssa Meharg; three dear sisters, Gaye (Millard) Jones; Marsha (Jack) Steelman and Connie (Jack) Wheeler; best friends Bo (Alice) Mahon and their family; along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends. In honor of his wishes he will be cremated without a funeral service because we love him so dearly, we carried out his wish. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Daniel Basos, by a brother, five sisters and her son-in-law, William Gonz. She is survived by her daughter, Marena Gonz of Binghamton, her son and daughter-in-law, John and Virginia Sauer-Basos of Lafayette, CA; her grandson, Michael Alexander Basos of Lafayette, CA; special several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends, especially at Riverside Towers. Lola enjoyed being a stay-at-home wife and mother until her husband died in 1963. She then took over her husband's insurance business, The Basos Insurance Agency, and worked as a licensed insurance broker for the next twenty-five years in Binghamton. She grew and maintained her business in a "man's world" by delivering insurance policies to each of her customers in person to get to know them as people. She was a member of the Zonta Club, the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Eastern Star, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Trinity Memorial Church where she served as a member of the Altar Guild. She also served as a volunteer at Lourdes Hospital. Lola enjoyed antiquing and was a talented quilter for over fifty years. She sewed each quilt by hand as she learned to do from her mother as she grew up in Arkansas. In her retirement years, she became an avid golfer and was a member of several golf leagues where she won many tournaments. She also enjoyed travelling. She and Marena would take a mother/daughter trip each summer. Her most favorite trip was the trip they took to Paris, France, but she also loved going to Hawaii, Acapulco, Montreal, the Grand Tetons, British Columbia, and many of the United States. Another memorable trip was one she took driving across the country. After she retired, Lola spent summers in Binghamton and winters at Leisure World, a retirement community, in Mesa, AZ. There she enjoyed golfing, walking, the companionship of many good friends, and many cultural activities. She had a fantastic sense of humor and lived life to the fullest! She was a member of the Church of God. She was a homemaker and loved to cook, garden, raise flowers, watch wrestling and especially loved reading her Bible. Lorene was a member of the Rock Lick Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Lorene was survived by one sister, Minrose Bray of Cincinnati, Ohio; one niece, Debbie (and Tom) Bray of Cincinnati, Ohio; a cousin, Christine Erp of Somerset, Kentucky; and lifelong friends, Carol Roman, Larry Roman, Larry III "Little Larry"(and wife, Tonya) Roman and their daughter, Sierra, all of Atlanta, Georgia; and a host of other family and friends who mourn her passing. Louisa passed away on Wednesday August 9, 2017 at the age of 91 at her home. Arrangements are under the direction of Dannel Funeral Home. Louisa was born July 5, 1926 in Mundhan, England to the late Herbert and Louisa (Warman) Bird. During World War II, she met and married the late Andrew Benton Coffman at Seething Church in Seething, England on May 21, 1945. Before coming to America, she gave birth to her first child Judith Coffman Norrell on April 13, 1946. During a continued 9 month stay in England, after the birth of her daughter, she continued her career as a telephone operator with the Royal Telephone Company of England. In January, 1947 she and her daughter left England on the USS Washington for her new life in America. After docking and processing in New York, she began the final trip to Grand Prairie, Texas by train and her final reunion with her husband and her new family. After receiving her American Citizenship in 1952, her GED in 1962, in 1963 she began her career as a telephone operator with GTE/Verizon where she worked for 25 years, retiring in 1987. He was a deacon and minister of music for Millville Baptist Church and was the principal of Millville Baptist Academy for over 25 years. | 4194 | Lucile Atkins Hicks, 94, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2009, in Farmville, Va. She was born in Wethersfield, Ill., but lived most of her life in Virginia. She was a graduate of Marion College and Radford University. Her life was spent as a teacher in the Public Schools of Virginia. She taught 38 years in Smyth and Giles Counties. She retired in 1975. Mrs. Hicks was the wife of Paul P. Hicks. They had one son, Dr. Paul P. Hicks Jr., a dentist in Farmville, Va. Survivors are Paul P. Hicks Jr. and his wife, Patricia Hicks; two grandchildren, Paul P. Hicks III (Trey and his wife, Meg), and Laura H. Coombe; along with one great-grandson, Lleyton Coombe. Also surviving is a sister, Marilyn A. Heston, of Illinois. | 4195 | Lucille Tregoning, age 79, went to be with the Lord on February 9, 2017, in Hagerstown, Md. Lucille was born on February 1, 1938 in Goins, TN (she was a twin). She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Curtis Tolliver and Mafalda Alena Tolliver. She had six sisters and one brother. She was preceded in death by her brother, Matthew Newton Tolliver; sisters, Lillie England, Annie Widner, Betty Myers, Louise England (her twin), and Maudie Cochrum. Lucille loved her siblings and parents more than can be explained. Lucille is survived by her loving husband, Jim Tregoning. They were married over thirty years. They lived together in Falling Waters, WV. Over their lifetime together, they loved to travel to the beach, spend time with their family, and enjoy all that life had to offer. She also enjoyed spending the day with her dog Coco who brought much joy to both her and Jim. Jim was the most caring husband. When Lucille became ill, Jim took the best care of her. He did everything for her. She loved him very much and appreciated every little thing that he would do for her. Lucille also raised her four daughters with much love and discipline. She always made sure her daughters were taken care of even if she had to do without. Even as her daughters became adults, she remained that loving, guiding influence that help direct them with their own lives. To her, family was very important and she was also there for each and every one of them. Lucille is survived by her daughters Sherry Long (husband Eddie Long), Connie King (husband - preceded in death Rick King), Tammy Scott (husband Jeff Scott), and Malisa Redmond (husband Andy Redmond). Lucille is also survived by her step children, Jimmy Tregoning, Vickie Miller, and Stacy … She was preceded in death by Ricky Tregoning and Mark Tregoning. Lucille is survived by her wonderful grandchildren that absolutely meant the world to her. For years, Lucille always had a video camera on the ready to make sure she captured memories of them. She made sure they knew how special each and every one of them were to her. Lucille has many nieces and nephews that she held dear to her. Not a day went by that she didn’t think of them fondly and enjoyed talking to them on the phone. Lucille was a very outgoing person. She never met a stranger. She loved to tell jokes and reminisce about the past. She was also a very giving person. If she heard someone had a need, she was the first to try her best to help them out. Her two favorite charities were St. Jude’s and Wounded Warrior. She always felt you needed to give to those who needed it the most. She just loved life and people, but her first love was always God. She had the strongest faith and had no doubt about her life after this one. The family wants to thank all those who loved this woman (and it was many). We want to give a special thanks to all her caregivers Dr. Waheed (Western Maryland and Meritus Hospitals). They did everything they could to help her during a very tough journey and we can never repay the love and care she received. She was born in Speedwell, TN on February 22, 1928, daughter of the late Fate McNew and Della (Williams) McNew. Lula was a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend. She was preceded in death by husband Ulys (Doc) Mayes. Survivors include Larry (Joan) Mayes and Daryl (Linda) Mayes, grandchildren Emily and Makayla Mayes, several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends Friday, April 6, 2018, from 6 PM until 8 PM at Reece Funeral Home Valley Chapel. | 4197 | Lydia Helton Slusher-Ridings January 17, 1932 - July 12, 2022 Lydia Helton Slusher-Ridings, 90, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, after a valiant three-year battle with cancer and (recent) dementia. She was born and lived most of her life in Tremont, Harlan County, KY. Her last several years were spent in Roanoke, VA, with family and second husband, Archie Keith Ridings. Born on January 17, 1932, Lydia grew up nourishing an interest in fashion and sewing. She excelled early at sewing in the 4-H Club at Pine Flat School, Tremont, KY, then in Home Economics at Loyall High School, Loyall, and afterwards continued learning the trade, ultimately opening her own home sewing business for private clients while attending to her roles as a wife, homemaker, and mother to six sons. Many women throughout Harlan County, KY, will remember Lydia for her beautiful, custom-tailored clothes – from professional suits/ensembles to school band uniforms and majorette outfits, and even gowns for an opera singer who took them around the world on tours. Lydia was also an avid quilter and has left a legacy of beautiful quilts with her family members. Lydia left high school one semester before graduating to marry her (first) husband, Charles Clayton Slusher, of Page, Bell County, KY. Together for 37 years, they created a loving home environment for their six sons. After Charles' passing in 1986, Lydia later met and married Archie Keith Ridings, originally of Fonde, Bell County, KY. They enjoyed a marriage of 32 years until Archie's passing on July 10, 2020. Lydia's big family was the light of her life and the love she received from them both individually and collectively gave her life great meaning. One can only hope that the pain of her loss is tempered by the joy of having known her. Lydia is preceded in death by her parents, Elijah and Phemia (Shackleford) Helton of Tremont; brothers, Lloyd, Elijah Jr., and Dee Jackson; husbands Charles Clayton Slusher and Archie Keith Ridings; and youngest son, Roger Brian Slusher of Louisville, KY. Lydia is survived by five sons: Charles Stephan (Steve) Slusher (Janet Leathers) of Louisville; Harry Christopher Slusher (Steven Parker) of Roanoke, VA; Aaron Clay Slusher (Eva Owens) of Cumberland, KY; Phillip Eric Slusher (Melissa Browning) of Ringgold, GA; Jeffrey Kenton Slusher (Robin Cannette) of Thurmont, MD; and, daughter-in-law April (Nabb) Slusher, Louisville. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Amanda (Slusher) and Kent Jennings of Louisville; Ralene Slusher and Anthony Turner of Louisville; Olivia Slusher and Ethan Slusher of Louisville; Caitlyn Slusher and Dylan Slusher of Thurmont, MD; Tyler Slusher and Jack Slusher of Ringgold, GA; and Aaron Slusher of Cumberland, KY; and by one great granddaughter, Alaina Jennings, of Louisville. While in Roanoke, Lydia received stellar health care from professionals at Lewis Gale Physicians and Lewis Gale Hospital, to whom the Slusher family extends sincere thanks. The family offers a special thank you to Dr. David Iglesais and his wonderful staff at Carilion Clinic for Geriatric Oncology for their compassionate care that helped Lydia enjoy her last three years of life. Also, a special thank you to the caring staff at Berkshire Nursing and Rehabilitation in Vinton, VA, for their care over the last month of Lydia's life. And, lastly, another special thanks to the staff at Good Samaritan Hospice, Roanoke, for helping navigate her care at the end of life and keeping her comfortable. Lydia was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Loyall, KY, where she and husband Archie enjoyed being part of a loving and active worship community of seniors. A public visitation will be held 5-8 pm, Thursday, July 21, 2022, at Loyall Funeral Home, 104 Wilkerson Street, Loyall, KY. | 4198 | Lynn Woodard of Pennington Gap, VA. passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at the age of 57 as the result of a farming accident. Lynn was born on June, 19, 1955. He was an employee of Southern Coal Corp. and he loved farming. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Ceonia Ridings Woodard. Lynn is survived by sons, Nate Woodard of Arlington, VA, and Tommy Woodard of Radford, VA.; the mother of his children, Pat Kennedy of Big Stone Gap; sisters, Retha and husband, David Cole of Dryden and Marsha and husband, Winston Terry of Big Stone Gap; brothers, Eddie and wife, Kristi Woodard and Tim and wife, Gina Woodard, all of Pennington Gap, Jimmy and wife, Becky Woodard of Keokee; best friends, Aunt Glenda and Uncle Bill Parks of Pennington Gap, Mike Janice and Ashley Robbins of Bonny Blue, and many special aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. Lucille graduated from Rural Retreat High School and earned a degree in Nursing from Johns Hopkins University. Lucille was known for her sassy, lively wit, artistic flair and a penchant for nature, animals and children. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. | 4200 | ma Sue Duvall VALPARAISO/BLACK OAK - Ima Sue Duvall, beloved daughter, mother, and mamaw, was called to her awaited heavenly home on Sunday, January 27, 2019. She was born in Laurel County, KY on December 29, 1938 to Delmer and Polly Watkins. Ima Sue was raised in Black Oak, now Gary, where she attended school and met and married her sweetheart Raymond L. Duvall January 14, 1955. In 1986 the Duvall's purchased a small farm in Porter County where they fulfilled their lifelong dream of country living and love for animals. Together, they especially enjoyed traveling to equine parks, camping in their old RV, trail rides, and participating in local parades on their prized horses. Sue and Ray shared 56 years of marriage together, and he has been awaiting her heavenly arrival since his passing in 2011. She had many fond memories of her time working for R.J. Connor & VNA of Porter County for 20 years. Ima Sue treasured the sweet memory of accepting Christ at young age during a Salvation Army VBS and has left a lifelong legacy for all who know her. She was a long time member of Eastlake Baptist Church in Crown Point, Indiana where she volunteered and taught Sunday School until illness caused her to become homebound in 2011. Her immense love for Bible teaching and Southern Gospel Music was known by all, and she was one of the greatest prayer warriors this side of Heaven. Ima Sue leaves behind to carry on her legacy three children Colman Mark (Rita), Stephanie (Charlie) Spudic-Ward, and Angela (Keith) Schweder; grandchildren Amanda (Eric) Ginther, Tyler Spudic, Tabitha (Mike) Somers, Brittany (Shawn), and Carson Albertson; step-grandchildren Corey and Ryan Ashcraft and Brian Ward; 18 great grandchildren; brother, Ravel and Christine Watkins London, KY; several nieces and nephews and special friends. Also remembering her memorable friends who have gone before her. Her prayer was that others would know Jesus and would meet her there.
