4408 Susan was born in Stonega, which is now part of Wise Co VA

This is not a farming community. Why live in this area in 1846?
Ridings, Susan Louisa (I768)

4409 Susan's marriage to Henry Cinnamon is questionable.
The 1870 Claiborne Co TN census shows Susan Ridings still at home and a Henry Sinnamon living next door married to a Susan.
Some researcher have Lucy and Susan Ridings as the some person and married to Reuben Standifer or Henry Cinnamon.
I believe Lucy Ridings was married to Henry Cinnamon. I have no information on Susan. She was last seen on the 1870 TN census
Neither Susan nor Lucy , I believe were married to Reuben Standifer.

Note: a Reuben Standifer married Lucy Cinnamon in 1932. Lucy Ridings Cinnamon died in 1914

4415 The date of death is from his death certificate.
His gravemarker shows Oct 8, 1933. The birth certificate does not show a date of birth but it does show his age as
64 years/6 months/20 days which would resolve to 18 Mar 1869.
The 1870/1880 census shows him borm in abt 1867

Asked if she remembered Henry Coffman, his granddaughter Vida Hale Pope said yes she did. She remembered him as being very kind and gentle. She could remember when she was very young sitting on his lap and him rocking her. Vida said the story of him being shot while riding horseback was not true. The family could have never afforded a horse.

Henry and John Aaron Coffman worked at Bodert Mines which were closed as the depression set in. The two brothers then started working a mine in Pocket. Henry would walk from V.I.C. (a mining camp just outside of St Charles) to Pocket (guessing about 3-4 miles) everyday to work the mine. Henry died shortly after they started up the mine. Vida thought walking in the bad weather may have lead to his death, but from the cause of death on the his death certificate I wouldn't think so.

4416 The death certificate for William Coffman's brother James, shows his mother's maiden name to be Coats.
Some source have the maiden name as Holt.

Some trees have Jane Galloway since a William Coffman married a Jane in Arkansas in 1851. Does not make sense

Hello,
I'm new to the list and looking for a ggg grandmother. Unfortunately, I only have a name and no birth or death dates. Her name is Jane Coats, she was from Tn. Her Husband's name was William Coffman or Kauffman also of Tn.

One of their son's names was William Isac Coffman or Kauffman born Jun. 14, 1860 in Tn. His dod : Apr. 10, 1948. He married Sarah Jane Kearley in Va. When they moved from Va, the story says he changed his surname to Coffman.

This is all I have on these relations. Would love to hear from anyone who may have info. Thank you! Diana

4417 The family name is often shown as Musser, a very common name in Smyth Co VA. But since Mercer is used most often for this branch of the family in the census and on his death record, I choose to use that Mercer, William Mastin (I1190)

4418 The following is from a message posted to ancestry.com by John Mills of CA

There are two john ridings one born in 1850 married Julia A. TINNEL
one born in 1857 married Elizabeth SPARKS may be the same person

John married Julia A. Tinnel on June 23, 1883 in Claiborne County, Tenn. I assume that his first wife, Elizabeth Sparks died before 1883. I am not directly related to John Ridings, only by his marriage to Elizabeth Sparks, so I don't document his second marriage.

Looking for info. on John R. Ridings born 1850 possibly in Va. He married Julia A. Tindell thought to have been born in Tn. in 1871. They had the following children- John Calvin, Thomas M., David N., Martin J., Nancy, Coyett C., Letthia Viola, Ike, Sarah L., William J., Maggie E., and another child unknown. John Calvin was my great grandfather. He married Mary (Mammie) Jeffries. Looking for anyone searching for this line of Ridings or Jeffries.

4436 This email mentions a son name Archie. I have found nothing to support this except the 1830 Wythe Co census includes a 10-15 year old male in David's household. I also have nothing to support the statement that John P was born in Culpepper County VA. Several researchers on MyHeritage and FamilySearch websites list an Archibald but undocumented. I chose not to enclude it.

Hi Ray

Wow! It always throws me off a bit when I get E-mail on family history. I do recall the post that I sent. Hmmm...where did I get the info from? I have a family history around here somewhere.

OK I found it !! Where I got the info from was a letter written by Henry S. Ridings, now deceased (Henry is my husbands great uncle/great grand son to David Ridings) the letter is not dated but I do know that it was written many, many years ago. The info states that his great grandfather David Ridings was born on the North bend of the Yadkin River in 1784 died in KY in 1881. The way I understand this is that his wife's name was Elizabeth and they had children born in NC Bill, Archie, Matson and a daughter but that John P. was born in Culpepper County, VA 1813 dies in KY 1892. I don't know what took them to VA. That is all I have, if I can come up with more info I will let you know. I might be able to put you in touch with other family members that have more history. I hope this helps some. Take care

Meta Ridings

Smyth Co VA was formed in 1832 from parts of Wythe and Washington Cos.

David was 75 in 1860 but his date of death of July 11 1881. He would have been 96.
I cannot find him in the 1870 or 1880 census and wonder if the year on his marker is actually 1861.

Classification: QuerySurnames: Hi Jim, I might have some info for you on the Ridings family. My husbands family also came from England. The story that we have always heard was that we they came here they settled in North Carolina along the Yadkin River. Check the library I believe there is a book about the people of the Yadkin River area and the Ridings are mentioned. My husbands great-great-great grandfather was David Ridings born Sept. 7th 1784 on the north bend of the Yadkin River. Died July 11th 1881 Somerset Kentucky. Before there life in Kentucky he lived with his wife Elizabeth in Jonesville, Lee county Virgina. This is where my husbands great-great grandfather John Perkins Ridings was born in Culpepper County, so on and so on. It seemed the story was told that when the Ridings came to America there were 3 brothers and they branched of and went in different directions. So check out the history of the Yadkin River you may find so info. It sounds like you might be from the same branch as our family.
