| 501 | Donna “Kay” (Marsee) Clutter passed away October 8, 2024 after a sudden illness. Kay was born December 18, 1951 to Sherman William and Lucretia Arlene (Bolenbaugh) Marsee in Celina, Ohio. She grew up in Van Wert and Mercer counties where many of her family still lives. Kay married Thomas Clutter on December 22, 1991. Tom farmed in Mercer County while Kay worked in local factories. The couple moved to Florida for a short time, working for a large farming operation. After returning to Mercer County, Tom and Kay joined sister Faye and her husband, John, establishing a large farming operation in northeast Colorado. Tom and Kay moved to Huerfano County where Tom worked construction and Kay worked at the local hospital before returning to Logan County where they retired. Kay is survived by husband Tom, daughter Michelle Goins, granddaughters Kassandra, Michaela Goins, grandson Konner, and 6 great grandchildren, Nevaeh, Kaylee, Cataleya, Jackson, Bella, and Jacob. She is also survived by brothers Gene (Georgia) and Dennis (Connie) Marsee and Faye (John) Stroh, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Kay was preceded in death by her parents and brother Cletus (Myrna) Marsee. A memorial service will be held October 19, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at the Crook Fire Department Hall, Crook, Colorado. | 503 | Doris Lucille Gaddis, age 68, of Lexington, Kentucky, died Tuesday, December 29, 1992, at King's Daughters Memorial Hospital in Frankfort following a lengthy illness. Born in Singletontown, Kentucky, on October 25, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Dolly Ann Singleton Spears Whitter and Fred Spears. A sitter with the elderly, Gaddis was a member of the Eastland Church of God in Lexington. Survivors are sons Randy Gaddis of Somerset, David Gaddis and Charles Gaddis, both of Indiana; daughters Fredia Rice of Lexington, Janice Elmore of Lebanon, Indiana, Sharlene Childress of Brodhead, Kentucky, and Elizabeth Gaddis,of Indiana; a stepfather, Wesley Whitter of Eubank; and several grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Joe B. Allen and Pheba Hale Allen; and two brothers, William Keith Allen and James Allen. She was born in Davisburg, Kentucky on May 24, 1927, a daughter of the late Foster and Nannie Jones Tolliver. Dorothy had been a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Toy Partin; and her siblings, Lewis Tolliver, Pauline Greer, Authur Tolliver, John Matt Tolliver, Renfro Tolliver, Sylvia Witt, Martha Fletcher, Rosie Wheeler, and Charlotte Mills. Born January 30, 1928, at Pineville, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Bertha Hubbard Ridings. She was a graduate of Bell County High School, and she believed in the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Coach/Judge Willie Hendrickson; sisters, Wanda Hoskins and Edna Goley; and two brothers, Charles and Lee Ridings. Survivors include her son, Billy Hendrickson of Middlesboro; two daughters, Kay (Phillip) Brooksof Mobile, Ala., and Michelle Hendrickson of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Eric (Mandy) Chadwell, Maryville, Tenn.; Jill Chadwell (Mark) Johnson, Mobile, Ala.; great-grandchildren, Brenna Johnson and Kate Johnson, Mobile, Ala., and Caroline Chadwell and Ian Chadwell, Maryville, Tenn.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. | 508 | Dorthea Evalene Leonard, 87, of Salem formerly of Roanoke, passed away on April 22, 2006. Ms. Leonard was born at Groseclose in Smyth County, Va. She served in World War II in the WAACs, then in the Women's Army Corp. until January 1946. She graduated from Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky. and served as house mother at Methodist Children's Home in Decatur, Ga. until 1968. On returning to Roanoke, she was employed by Community Hospital as a nursing assistant until retirement. She was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church and Roanoke WCTU. She was honored by the Roanoke WCTU and in 1999 by the Virginia WCTU for more than 50 years of service. Ms. Leonard was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Susie Leonard; two brothers, Leon, killed in WWII, and Donald; infant sister, Isabelle; and sister June Simmons. Surviving are brothers, William J. (and Judy) Leonard of Virginia Beach, Paul Edward Leonard, Jr. (and Becky) of Roanoke, sisters, Peggy L. Stober of Vinton, and Nancy L. Four children survive her: James and wife Debora Douglas of Gratis, daughter Donna Peacock and husband Mike of Bellbrook, Gary and wife Chris Douglas of OR and Roger and wife Deanna Douglas of KY. Two sisters also survive her: Violet Meadows of Centerville and Velma White of KY, as do seven grandchildren: Jamie Orozco, Jennifer Schmidlin, Gary Douglas, Laura Robinson, Maxwell Douglas, Katie Douglas and Michael Peacock, as well as five great-grandchildren: Marielena, Isabella, Benjamin and Felix Orozco and Carter Schmidlin and her dear friends Ray and Jo Lewis. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Pearl Wertz and Edna Skinner, and a brother, Victor Newman. Marcia was born in Corbin, KY and attended Corbin Church of Christ regularly. | 512 | Dr. Frank F. Allen November 2, 1922 - February 24, 2018 East Wenatchee, WA Retired Commander Frank F. Allen, United States Navy, Medical Corps, of East Wenatchee, WA, passed away peacefully and went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 24, 2018. He was 95 years old and succumbed to natural causes. Dr. Allen was born November 2, 1922, in Rochester, NY, to Dr. Walter C. Allen and Sarah Clarke-Fosdick. He was the middle child of three, with an older sister, Mary Jane Van Horn (nee Allen), and a younger brother, Walter P. Allen. In his youth, Dr. Allen enjoyed church and school activities, excelled in academics, and achieved Eagle Scout, the highest honor bestowed a Boy Scout. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree from University of Rochester in New York, the alma mater of both of his parents, in June 1945, and followed his father’s footsteps into the field of medicine and the field of battle. He graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in June of 1948, and then, less than a month later, he was called to active duty in the United States Navy as part of the Medical Corps. In the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, he saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters, including an assignment as a flight surgeon on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CV-34), during the Korean War. In 1952, he began a residency in Urology at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA. After spending time at naval hospitals in southern California and Guam, Dr. Allen retired from active duty in 1958. He transferred to the U.S. Naval Reserve and, in 1982, after having served faithfully and honorably for more than three decades, he retired from the U.S. Navy. In 1958, after his retirement from active duty, Dr. Allen learned of an opportunity for a Urologist in Wenatchee, WA. At the time he joined, the Wenatchee Valley Clinic had only ten specialists on staff. Over the next 34 years, Dr. Allen helped build Wenatchee Valley Clinic (now Confluence Health) into one of the leading medical care facilities in central Washington. He retired in 1992 from practicing medicine, and during his tenure, the clinic grew to over 145 specialists on staff, including four Urologists. Dr. Allen was a resident of the Wenatchee Valley for over 60 years. He was an active citizen in the community and was a faithful member of the Freemasonry chapters of the Wenatchee Valley, where he served in multiple roles and achieved the final, 33rd degree of the Scottish Rite. He spent his free time with his family, watching his grandchildren learn to play golf, and traveling often with his late wife, Yvonne “Vonnie” Allen. Dr. Allen was preceded in death by his wife, Vonnie; his parents, Walter C. and Sarah Allen; brother, Walter P. Allen; sister, Mary Jane Van Horn; daughter, Cindy Allen Kirby and son, Mike Allen. Driver of Driver Ranch near Canadian, Texas, were brought to this city, following her sudden death, which occurred on Friday morning. Mrs. Driver was well known in Lawton, having resided here during her girlhood and has a large circle of friends will mourn her death. She is the daughter of Mrs. Johnstone of this city and a sister of Mrs. L. T. Gooch and Dr. J. C. and Kelly Johnstone, also of this city. Dr. J. C. Johnstone accompanied the remains to this city. Hale. He was born and spent most of his life at Blackwater, KY but has lived in Oregon for the past 25 years. He was married Aug. 13, 1884 to Miss Nancy Tuttle, who with four sons survive. He was united in marriage to Billie Anne Shomaker Ridings who survives of London, Kentucky. Ted was a Shriner and a member of the McKee Masonic Lodge for over 60 years, where he served as a former Master. He retired from Kern’s Bakery after 49 years. He was an avid gardener and a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he also served as an usher for 40 years. Hale, aged 76 years, 25 days. He was born and reared on Blackwater, Laurel County, KY, and was first united in marriage to Mahala Sasser and from this union there were born one son and two daughters. After her death he was again united in marriage to Elizabeth McFadden, and ten children were born to the union, three of whom died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Mahala Ledington, who preceded him to the grave ten years ago. Those of his children present at the funeral were Mrs. Ida Walden, Mrs. Susie Burkhart, Mrs. Nelle Mullins and Milford and Rufus Hale. Three sons, Thomas Hale, of Florence, CO; Edward Hale of Council Bluff, IA; and Bolton Hale of Lawton, OK could not be present. He leaves a wife, three brothers, Frank, Wm., and E. Hale, one sister, Mrs. Dora Baird, all of Blackwater and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his death. He was first taken ill Nov. 2, 1923 with pneumonia and other troubles, from which he did not fully recover although he was able to go about some and one week before he died he said that God in His mercy had spared his life so he could do his Father's will from then until the end. She was born June 12, 1914, in Lewis County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Charles and Sarah Moveta Kegley Shaw. Flora was a life-long resident of Lewis County and attended the Shepherds Chapel Church and Galilee Christian Church for many years. She was a loving wife and mother. Flora was well known for her Sunday dinners, as many residents in Lewis County had the wonderful opportunity to sit at her table as she gladly served them a warm, home-cooked meal. Flora loved her family, friends and church. She loved raising a garden and sharing the harvest with friends and family. Even with failing health issues, with the help of her daughter, Linda, and granddaughter, Malena, they were able to can many fruits and vegetables for the winter. Flora enjoyed reading her Bible. In her spare time on long winter days, she enjoyed keeping her mind sharp by working her Bible word puzzles and quilting. Flora also thoroughly enjoyed a good game of dominos with her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her first husband of 44 years, Hubert Moore, who passed away on January 16, 1978; her second husband of two years, Sam Dunigan, who passed away on December of 1990; one grandson, Daron Joe Ruggles; two sisters, Edith Jackson and Nellie Sexton; one brother, Ora Shaw; and three half-brothers, Albert, Ernest, and Elmer Hyrne. | 571 | Floyd Tiller was struck and killed by the Burlington passenger train No. 43. Tuesday afternoon while attempting to cross the trestle over Sulpher creek about one mile west of town. Mr. Tiller bad been out hunting and was returning home. He was part way across the trestle when a warning blast from the whistle attracted bis attention to the rapidly approaching train. Being a cripple, having to walk with a crutch, and being much impeded by bis game bag and gun, be tried vainly to gain the end of the bridge toward which the train was rushing. He was within but a few feet of solid earth and safety when the pilot of the engine struck him. He was burled by the impact turn the east end of the trestle to the west end, a distance of some fifty feet or more, where his lifeless body was later picked up by a number of friends of the family who were hurried to the scene of accident on switch engine 1314, and the remains were brought to the city and carried to the family residence. Dr. T. P. Gronoway, coroner, was summoned and an inquest was held Tuesday evening, the jury returning a verdict of unavoidable accident. The funeral services were held from the family residence Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Elder F. T. Mussell. Interment was made in Oakwood cemetery. Floyd Tiller was born in Virginia in 1843 and came to Bevier about fourteen years ago where be has since worked in the mines. Some few years ago he met with an accident which made him a cripple, so much so that many a man would have thought himself incapable of work. Not so with Mr. Tiller, however, and be remained in the employ of the company until his death, He was an industrious kindhearted man. Besides the widow, he leaves six children to mourn his loss. He was an Executive Chef for the Murat Shrine for 15 years, retiring in 1994. Frank was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of the Murat Shrine, American Legion and the St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Vernon Street, Somerset, Kentucky 42501 From Our Past A REGULAR TUESDAY FEATURE BY JACK NORTON From Our Past appears one day late because of space limitations in Tuesday's Commonwealth Journal. today's column is written by Mrs. Herbert R. Ledford, 201 May Street, Somerset. she is a native of the Grundy community of Pulaski County. About four miles from Somerset, nestled in a valley just off Ky. 80 and a short distance from the foot of Sugar Hill, stands an abandoned Methodist church. The white frame church, whose windows have long been boarded and whose doors are locked, is called Soules Chapel church. It was named for Bishop Soule, head of the local Methodist Church when this particular building was erected. The church replaced an old log structure called Gragg's Chapel. In 1857 John P. Ridings bought the old church, dismantled it and used some of the logs to construct a barn on his farm, which is located near the site of Soules Chapel. Construction of the present building was started in the autumn of 1857 and completed the same season a year later. It is thought the land was donated by Allen Cox. Ridings directed the construction of the new church, which has a stone foundation and underpinnings of hand-hewn logs. He, along with John Richardson and *** L. R. (Collier) Colyer, helped most in furnishing materials and money for the new structure. All the lumber used for framing was whip-sawed by Bill Calhoun and Peter Baker. The lumber for the church pews was sawed at a watermill some distance away. At one time Soules Chapel had a membership of more than 200 people andthe second-best organized Sunday School in the Danville District. It was the Mother Church to the First Methodist Church of Somerset. However, at the time of the Civil War, a tremendous uprising came in the church and,as a result, the membership split. Those with sympathies for the North left the church and formed Bradley's Chapel - Northern Methodist Church,located about two miles south of Soules Chapel. Soules Chapel was then known as Soules Chapel Southern Methodist Church. It is impossible to find a list of the real charter members, but from theearliest church records are found the names of Collier, Richardson, Gragg and Ridings. In 1940 Rev. Charles Marshal Cavit, a circuit preacher, compiled much of the church's history and listed the following membership: Alton F. Bates, Evelyn M. Bates, Clarence G. Bryant, Della V. In 1966, Mary moved to Monroe where she raised her four boys. She spent many years watching their sporting events and other activities. Mary worked for 24 years as a bus driver for Lake Erie Bus Company, keeping a close friendship with her valued co-workers after her retirement. Mary met Neal Spaulding while working at Lake Erie Transit, they married in April 1984 and spent more than 30 years together. Mary was an active member of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and helped deliver meals to those who needed them. She was also a very good cook. In addition to her love for her family, Mary had a love for her friends. She could find the good in everyone and always had a kind word for others. She entered heavenly peace Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016. Kathleen was born April 17, 1930, in Manchester, England. Upon meeting and marrying the love of her life she settled in Louisville. In 1953 the family moved to Utica where she resided for more than 60 years. She was employed with Glenmore Distilleries, Louisville, as Assistant Vice-President, and served the town of Utica as Clerk-Treasurer for several years. The joys of her life were gardening, spending winters in Gulf Shores, Ala., with Bob, hosting family holiday events, and numerous swim parties for the grandchildren. Her passion was Ball Room Dancing. She shares the story of learning to ball room dance while sequestered in the air raid shelter during the bombings of England. To pass the time the older children taught the younger children to dance. A passion for music and dance that never left. She is survived by a son, Taylor Ridings and his wife, Sharon; daughter, Lynn R. Vaught; daughter-in-law, Donna Ridings; grandchildren, Corey Ridings and his wife, Amber, Brian Ridings, Jenna Vaught, Sara Vaught and Emily Vaught; great-granddaughter, Kyla Vaught-Shouse; sisters, Frances Birdwell, and Maureen Carl; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Jarvis suffered a stroke ten months ago at her home on Long street and has been confined since. Her condition became critical about one month ago. A native of Laurel county, Mrs. Jarvis was born Oct. 7, 1883, at Blackwater, the daughter of Richard d. and Sarah E. Hale. On Jan. 14, 1909 she was married to Mr. Jarvis and before moving to London twenty-six years ago to make their home, the couple resided in Ft. McPherson, GA, for two years; in Louisville two years and in Youngstown, OH six years. Mrs. Jarvis was active in all church work and was a member of Mrs. J.K. Lewis' Bible Class. She was a member of the Daughters of America and after the start of World War II, she helped to her utmost in making surgical dressings. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, both of whom are in the service: Otis D. Jarvis, Inkster, MI and Everett R. Jarvis, London. She also leaves two brothers, Richard D. | 597 | Garfield Gilreath, a wise and loving husband and dad, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 18, 2020 at the age of 94. Garfield was born to Herman and Arlena Gilreath in Holly Hill, KY in 1925. He served with the United States Army in World War II in the Pacific Theater. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Irene (Ausmus) who he was married to for 66 years, by his son Randy (Jennifer), and by his four sisters. Garfield is survived by his son Gary (Alice Behnken); daughter-in-law, Jennifer of Knoxville; and granddaughters, Michelle Netherland (Chris) of Chattanooga and Jennelle Owens (Kevin) of Crestwood, MO. Garfield was most proud of and often publicly praised his two sons and two granddaughters and their many accomplishments. He was an avid gardener and beekeeper, he loved the mountains and ocean, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was proud of his military service. He loved talking with family, friends, and neighbors, and initiating conversations with new acquaintances. He was loved and respected by all and will be greatly missed. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on June 20, 2020 at the Marietta Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery. | 600 | Gary Paul Ridings, 47, of Noblesville passed away Friday, April 10, 2009 at his residence. Born Oct. 30, 1961 in Noblesville, he was the son of Hobert and Thelma (Lewis) Ridings. He was a 1980 graduate of Noblesville High School and worked for 30 years as a meat cutter for Marsh Supermarkets. He was also a volunteer leader for the Hamilton County 4-H Club, and loved to hunt, fish, and spend time with his family and friends. Survivors include his parents; wife, Cathy (Blackford) Ridings; son, Brandon Lee Ridings; daughters, Amber Nichole Ridings and Jacque Blythe; brother, Dennis Ridings; sisters, Rita Hurlock and Dawn Jones; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
