601	Gary Wayne Cox, age 62 of Somerset, Ky., departed this life on Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 at his residence. He was born on May 13, 1950 in Somerset, Ky. to the late Hayden Coy and Betty Ridings Cox. He had formerly worked as an officer for the Somerset Police Department. Mr. Cox had also worked as a corrections officer and probation and parole officer for the Chesapeake Department of Corrections for the State of Virginia. Mr. Cox was a United States Army veteran. He enjoyed fishing and helping others. He was a loving father, grandfather, husband and brother. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Pat) Cox of Somerset, Ky., whom he married on Sept. 21, 2003 in Burnside, Ky.; Julia R. Cox-Ward, the mother of his children; three sons, Kevin (and Amanda) Cox of Somerset, Ky., Michael E. (and Charla) Cox of Custer, Ky., and a step-son, Charlie H. (and Chelsea) Smitson of Georgetown, Ky.; eight grandchildren, Gary Jerome Cox, Jordan Danielle Cox, Cody Wayne Cox, Blakely Adam Collingsworth, Baylee Ashton Collingsworth, Willow Reese Cox, Alyssa Brooke Smitson and Trevor Allen Smitson; and a sister, Connie Jean Cox (and Charles) Gibson of Somerset, Ky. Carling October 5, 1945 ~ August 18, 2020 (age 74) Obituary George “Jeff” Ferguson Carling On the last night of his life, Coach Jeff Carling went to bed with a big smile on his face. His beloved New York Yankees had just swept their long-time rival, the Boston Red Sox in a four-game series at Yankee Stadium. His wife, Phyllis, kissed him good night. Life was good. On Tuesday morning, August 18, 2020, George Ferguson “Jeff” Carling, died suddenly from an embolism at his summer home in Bean Station, TN. He was 74. Jeff was born on October 5, 1945 in Queens, NY to Jack and Ruth (Nally) Carling. He attended McKendree University, Murray State University, and Southern Illinois, Carbondale, where he received degrees in speech communication and physical education. He taught and coached basketball for over 38 years in Illinois and Florida. On December 16, 1995, he married the love of his life, Phyllis Ridings Alder. Jeff had a passion for bringing out the best of young men and women through his legendary motivational speeches and coaching basketball at the high school and junior college levels. He earned wins, accolades, entrance into several basketball halls of fame, and awed audiences with fantastical and fun play. Most of all, he earned the respect and friendship of his players for bringing out their best, commonly more than they thought possible. He was a man with a child's heart and a booming voice that could be heard in even the loudest stadium. He never tired of talking about old friends, past experiences or making new ones. Jeff loved to spin yarns, never hesitating to embellish the truth just a little if it made the story more entertaining or if could induce uncontrollable laughter from his audience. Jeff loved being in the spotlight, good music, steak, and a glass of white wine; the cheaper, the better. He had a mischievous smile and wink that could communicate exactly what needed to be said. He was an avid sports fan and loved nothing more than to tout his favorite teams: the Yankees, NY Giants, Notre Dame Football, and the Duke Blue Devils. He loved life and everyone in it. Everyone who met him could not help but to love him right back. Jeff leaves behind his loving wife Phyllis Carling, his niece Susannah McCarthy Westervelt, his nephews Brett Palmer and Todd Carling Palmer, and his brother-in-law Timothy Palmer. He is predeceased by his parents and sister Jackie (Carling) Palmer. A private grave-side service was conducted at Tioga Point Cemetery in Athens, PA with the Reverend Melinda Artman, Church of the Redeemer, Sayre, Pa, officiating. Jeff's favorite charities were St Jude’s Children's Research Hospital and The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. 606	GEORGE F HALE. RETIRED WELDER. Laurel native George Finley Hale, 67, of Madison, IND, died in the Clifty Falls Convalescent Center in Madison, IN, Thursday Feb. 11, 1993. Born Jan 24, 1926 in East Laurel's Blackwater community, Hale was a Nancy veteran and retired welder. He was preceded in death by his parents, Milford and Nancy Muncy Hale, and his wife, Imogene Stewart Hale. Survivors include one daugther, Susan Hale of Madison, IN; two sons, David Hale of Madison, IN and Larry Hale of Deputy, IN. Three sisters, Theda Hatcher of London; Doris JOnes of Advance, IN; and Velma Helensky of Maple Heights, OH. Three brothers, alvert Hale of London; Dennis Hale and Filmore Hale, both of Louisville, and four grandchildren. He died Wednesday at 7 a.m. at his home at Kinniconick. A native of Boyd County, he was born March 12, 1872, to George and Jane Musser Kegley. 611	Gertrude Baird Brummett June 10, 2013 Gertrude Baird Brummett LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. - Gertrude Baird Brummett, 100, of Corbin, Ky., passed away Monday, June 3, 2013, at the Christian Health Center. Born in the Blackwater area of Laurel County, Ky., she attended Laurel County schools, graduated from Sue Bennett College and attended Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College. She had been a teacher in the Laurel County School System, and later in partnership with brothers, Clifford and Francis, owned and operated Baird and Brummett Grocery Store. She was a member of Mount Salem Primitive Baptist Church. Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, John and Dora Hale Baird; and her siblings, Clifford Baird and wife Louise, Francis Baird and wife Susie, Thomas Beckner and wife Marie, Rosa Beckner Stewart and husband Wilson, Jim Cal Baird and wife Myrtle, Delila Baird Taylor, Dwight Baird, and Ulysses Baird. Her survivors include a daughter, Doralene Webb and husband, Ned; granddaughters Heather Kessler and husband, Bruce, and Melanie Gabbard and husband, Jesse; great-grandsons Todd and Evan Kessler; great-granddaughters Sarah and Emily Kessler and Avery Gabbard; and special nieces, nephews, and cousins. 612	Gertrude J Edmondson, age 86, of New Tazewell, TN was born March 26, 1936, and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 1, 2022. Gertrude was born to the late Crockett and Bertha Ridings, she was one of ten children and loved her family dearly. She married the love of her life Kenneth Edmondson on April 22, 1955. She was a loving wife, mother, granny, great granny, great-great granny, and friend to all. Gertrude was saved at a very young age and was a member of First Baptist Church in New Tazewell. She was known in the community as Granny Gertrude and Tootsie. Gertrude spent many years as a nurse for Dr. Smith in New Tazewell. She loved her patients like she loved her family. Gertrude was an avid fisher and liked nothing better than sitting on the lake bank. She lived life to the fullest and leaves behind many, many stories. Gertrude is preceded in death by her parents Crockett and Bertha Ridings. Husband of 67 years, Kenneth Edmondson. Siblings Frank Ridings, Jay Ridings, Bessie Dozier, Ted Ridings, Lee Roy Ridings, Warren Ridings, Wanda Carper, and David Ridings. Son-in-law Mike O'Dell. 616	Glendine “Glennie” Burkett, 86 years, of Monroe, MI passed away Thursday, February 11, 2010 in Mercy Memorial Hospital. Glennie had been in declining health for several years. Glennie, as her family and friends called her, was born February 5, 1924 in Toledo, OH the daughter of the late Jerry D. and Rosa (Robbins) Smith. Glennie attended Lincoln Elementary School and Monroe High School. Later in life she returned to school and graduated through Monroe Senior Citizens with her GED in 1985, something she was very proud of. In 1942 Glennie married James O. Garrett in Napoleon, OH, sadly he preceded her in death in 1963. In November of 1965 Glennie married Donald C. Burkett at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. During WWII Glennie worked at Woodall Industries in Monroe. She along with her husband Jim owned and operated Garrett’s Moving Company in Monroe, after Jim’s death she continued to run the company until her retirement in 1966. Glennie was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Glennie enjoyed reading, watching ice skating, and was an avid collector of teddy bears and perfume bottles for which she was nationally known. She also enjoyed traveling, meeting people and all the activities along with her husband Don as he sold and collected fruit jars and bottles. Glennie is survived by her beloved husband Don, her loving son and daughter in law Dennis J. and Barbara (Rassel) Garrett of Charleston, SC, 3 cherished grandchildren; Erica (Scott) Ensminger of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Matthew and Sean Garrett of Charleston, SC, 1 treasured great grandson Sammy, and a brother Thomas Gilbert of Toledo, OH. In addition to her parents and first husband Glennie was preceded in death by her foster parents; Elenor and George Morgan, sisters; Hazel Carter, Thelma and Mabel Smith, Irene Ginter, Geraldine Chevalia and a brother William Smith. 617	Grace Ridings Cupp was 5' 2" and weighed about 100 lbs. She had a small bone frame. She had dark hair and blue eyes. She was a pretty lady. She liked everything neat and clean around her. She had an eating problem. She didn't want to gain any weight...and stayed skinny until she passed away. Even people at normal weights looked fat to her. Right, wrong or in the middle...in every situation... Aunt Grace was on my side of things. She always showed me love and respect...and I'll always miss her. ________________________________________ Grady and Grace Ridings Cupp went on many camping and fishing trips. Aunt Grace loved the camping...but hated the fishing. She couldn't stand the smell of fish. ________________________________________ Aunt Grace died of cancer. She didn't go for check ups with her doctor. Because of this...she lost her life. The cancer started in her uterus and had spread into her pelvis bone by the time she visted her doctor. 618	Gracie Faye Owens Nix, 94 of Justin passed away on Monday, September 17, 2012 at home. She was born June 19, 1918 in Pilot Point, TX to Ocie and Lillian Maybell (Coffman) Burns. She was a homemaker and a member of the Full Gospel Church. Mrs. Nix is survived by an extended family, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, sons in law and friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Owens and Ray Nix, and daughters, Gloria Jean Neace and Carol Sue Estes. He had retired from Naval Regional Finance Center. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous since 1968 and the American Legion. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Gary Wayne Cox, age 62 of Somerset, Ky., departed this life on Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 at his residence. He was born on May 13, 1950 in Somerset, Ky. to the late Hayden Coy and Betty Ridings Cox. He had formerly worked as an officer for the Somerset Police Department. Mr. Cox had also worked as a corrections officer and probation and parole officer for the Chesapeake Department of Corrections for the State of Virginia. Mr. Cox was a United States Army veteran. He enjoyed fishing and helping others. He was a loving father, grandfather, husband and brother. George “Jeff” Ferguson Carling
On the last night of his life, Coach Jeff Carling went to bed with a big smile on his face. His beloved New York Yankees had just swept their long-time rival, the Boston Red Sox in a four-game series at Yankee Stadium. His wife, Phyllis, kissed him good night. Life was good.

On Tuesday morning, August 18, 2020, George Ferguson “Jeff” Carling, died suddenly from an embolism at his summer home in Bean Station, TN. He was 74.

Jeff was born on October 5, 1945 in Queens, NY to Jack and Ruth (Nally) Carling. He attended McKendree University, Murray State University, and Southern Illinois, Carbondale, where he received degrees in speech communication and physical education. He taught and coached basketball for over 38 years in Illinois and Florida. On December 16, 1995, he married the love of his life, Phyllis Ridings Alder.

Jeff had a passion for bringing out the best of young men and women through his legendary motivational speeches and coaching basketball at the high school and junior college levels. He earned wins, accolades, entrance into several basketball halls of fame, and awed audiences with fantastical and fun play. Most of all, he earned the respect and friendship of his players for bringing out their best, commonly more than they thought possible. He was a man with a child's heart and a booming voice that could be heard in even the loudest stadium. He never tired of talking about old friends, past experiences or making new ones. Jeff loved to spin yarns, never hesitating to embellish the truth just a little if it made the story more entertaining or if could induce uncontrollable laughter from his audience. Jeff loved being in the spotlight, good music, steak, and a glass of white wine; the cheaper, the better. He had a mischievous smile and wink that could communicate exactly what needed to be said. He was an avid sports fan and loved nothing more than to tout his favorite teams: the Yankees, NY Giants, Notre Dame Football, and the Duke Blue Devils. He loved life and everyone in it. Everyone who met him could not help but to love him right back.

Jeff leaves behind his loving wife Phyllis Carling, his niece Susannah McCarthy Westervelt, his nephews Brett Palmer and Todd Carling Palmer, and his brother-in-law Timothy Palmer.

He is predeceased by his parents and sister Jackie (Carling) Palmer.

A private grave-side service was conducted at Tioga Point Cemetery in Athens, PA with the Reverend Melinda Artman, Church of the Redeemer, Sayre, Pa, officiating.

Jeff's favorite charities were St Jude’s Children's Research Hospital and The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. More than anything, Jeff would want you to honor his memory by being kind and helping every young child to truly believe “If you think you can, you can.”

Laurel native George Finley Hale, 67, of Madison, IND, died in the Clifty Falls Convalescent Center in Madison, IN, Thursday Feb. 11, 1993.
Born Jan 24, 1926 in East Laurel's Blackwater community, Hale was a Nancy veteran and retired welder.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Milford and Nancy Muncy Hale, and his wife, Imogene Stewart Hale.
Survivors include one daugther, Susan Hale of Madison, IN; two sons, David Hale of Madison, IN and Larry Hale of Deputy, IN.
Three sisters, Theda Hatcher of London; Doris JOnes of Advance, IN; and Velma Helensky of Maple Heights, OH.
Three brothers, alvert Hale of London; Dennis Hale and Filmore Hale, both of Louisville, and four grandchildren.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hosue Rawlings Funeral home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Wagers officiating.
Burial followed in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Blackwater.

A native of Boyd County, he was born March 12, 1872, to George and Jane Musser Kegley.

George Ray, 74, Route 1, Ashland, died at 9:55 last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Osha Boggs, 2332 Greenup Avenue,following an illness of six weeks.

A resident of Ashland for the past 35 years, Mr. Ray was born in Carter County, Ky., April 6, 1874, a son of Lark and Polly Ann Newman Ray.

The body is at the John Steen Funeral Home, where friends may call after 10 a.m. tomorrow. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. - Gertrude Baird Brummett, 100, of Corbin, Ky., passed away Monday, June 3, 2013, at the Christian Health Center.
Born in the Blackwater area of Laurel County, Ky., she attended Laurel County schools, graduated from Sue Bennett College and attended Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College. She had been a teacher in the Laurel County School System, and later in partnership with brothers, Clifford and Francis, owned and operated Baird and Brummett Grocery Store. She was a member of Mount Salem Primitive Baptist Church.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, John and Dora Hale Baird; and her siblings, Clifford Baird and wife Louise, Francis Baird and wife Susie, Thomas Beckner and wife Marie, Rosa Beckner Stewart and husband Wilson, Jim Cal Baird and wife Myrtle, Delila Baird Taylor, Dwight Baird, and Ulysses Baird.
Her survivors include a daughter, Doralene Webb and husband, Ned; granddaughters Heather Kessler and husband, Bruce, and Melanie Gabbard and husband, Jesse; great-grandsons Todd and Evan Kessler; great-granddaughters Sarah and Emily Kessler and Avery Gabbard; and special nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation at the Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home will began at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 5 with the funeral service following at 4 p.m., led by Chaplain Joan Schlesing.

Gertrude J Edmondson, age 86, of New Tazewell, TN was born March 26, 1936, and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 1, 2022.

Gertrude was born to the late Crockett and Bertha Ridings, she was one of ten children and loved her family dearly. She married the love of her life Kenneth Edmondson on April 22, 1955. She was a loving wife, mother, granny, great granny, great-great granny, and friend to all. Gertrude was saved at a very young age and was a member of First Baptist Church in New Tazewell. She was known in the community as Granny Gertrude and Tootsie. Gertrude spent many years as a nurse for Dr. Smith in New Tazewell. She loved her patients like she loved her family. Gertrude was an avid fisher and liked nothing better than sitting on the lake bank. She lived life to the fullest and leaves behind many, many stories.

Gertrude is preceded in death by her parents Crockett and Bertha Ridings. Husband of 67 years, Kenneth Edmondson. Siblings Frank Ridings, Jay Ridings, Bessie Dozier, Ted Ridings, Lee Roy Ridings, Warren Ridings, Wanda Carper, and David Ridings. Son-in-law Mike O'Dell.

She is survived by brother Earl (Barbara) Ridings. Children Carolyn O'Dell, Jim (Debbie) Edmondson, Patty (Eric) Starnes, and Janet (Scott) Housley. Grandchildren Mary (Tony) Mallicoat, Becky (Kevin) Fine, Sherry (Chance) Clower, Donna (Eric) Piontkowski, Jack (Caroline) Starnes, and Eli (Morgan) Housley. Glendine “Glennie” Burkett, 86 years, of Monroe, MI passed away Thursday, February 11, 2010 in Mercy Memorial Hospital. Glennie had been in declining health for several years.

Glennie, as her family and friends called her, was born February 5, 1924 in Toledo, OH the daughter of the late Jerry D. and Rosa (Robbins) Smith. Glennie attended Lincoln Elementary School and Monroe High School. Later in life she returned to school and graduated through Monroe Senior Citizens with her GED in 1985, something she was very proud of. In 1942 Glennie married James O. Garrett in Napoleon, OH, sadly he preceded her in death in 1963.

In November of 1965 Glennie married Donald C. Burkett at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

During WWII Glennie worked at Woodall Industries in Monroe. She along with her husband Jim owned and operated Garrett’s Moving Company in Monroe, after Jim’s death she continued to run the company until her retirement in 1966. Glennie was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Glennie enjoyed reading, watching ice skating, and was an avid collector of teddy bears and perfume bottles for which she was nationally known. She also enjoyed traveling, meeting people and all the activities along with her husband Don as he sold and collected fruit jars and bottles.

Glennie is survived by her beloved husband Don, her loving son and daughter in law Dennis J. and Barbara (Rassel) Garrett of Charleston, SC, 3 cherished grandchildren; Erica (Scott) Ensminger of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Matthew and Sean Garrett of Charleston, SC, 1 treasured great grandson Sammy, and a brother Thomas Gilbert of Toledo, OH. In addition to her parents and first husband Glennie was preceded in death by her foster parents; Elenor and George Morgan, sisters; Hazel Carter, Thelma and Mabel Smith, Irene Ginter, Geraldine Chevalia and a brother William Smith.

Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home.

Grace Ridings Cupp was 5' 2" and weighed about 100 lbs. She had a small
bone frame. She had dark hair and blue eyes. She was a pretty lady. She
liked everything neat and clean around her. She had an eating problem.
She didn't want to gain any weight...and stayed skinny until she passed
away. Even people at normal weights looked fat to her. Right, wrong or in
the middle...in every situation... Aunt Grace was on my side of things.
She always showed me love and respect...and I'll always miss her.

Grady and Grace Ridings Cupp went on many camping and fishing trips. Aunt
Grace loved the camping...but hated the fishing. She couldn't stand the
smell of fish.

Aunt Grace died of cancer. She didn't go for check ups with her doctor.
Because of this...she lost her life. The cancer started in her uterus and
had spread into her pelvis bone by the time she visted her doctor. It was
too late for surgery.

Gracie Faye Owens Nix, 94 of Justin passed away on Monday, September 17, 2012 at home.

She was born June 19, 1918 in Pilot Point, TX to Ocie and Lillian Maybell (Coffman) Burns. She was a homemaker and a member of the Full Gospel Church.

Mrs. Nix is survived by an extended family, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, sons in law and friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Owens and Ray Nix, and daughters, Gloria Jean Neace and Carol Sue Estes.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Belew Cemetery in Aubrey.

Graham G. ''Smokey'' Burgis, 64, of the 900 block of Quail St., a retired accountant, died June 11, 1994, in a local hospital.
Mr. Burgis was born in Wythe County, Va. He had retired from Naval Regional Finance Center. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous since 1968 and the American Legion. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was the son of the late William Charles and Essie Ratcliff Burgis. He was also predeceased by sisters, Ferrell Brawley and Deloris Stillwell.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley D. Burgis; two daughters, Suzy and Rich Hanssen of Norfolk and Ruth Burgis of Norfolk; two sons, Archie G. Burgis of Norfolk and Bill Burgis of Norfolk; two sisters, Velma Doss of Max Meadows, Va., and Lyn Andrews of Max Meadows; one granddaughter, Carolyn Markham of Norfolk; mother-in-law, Pauline Roseberry of Virginia Beach; sister-in-law, Louella Warden of Max Meadows; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Brenda and Lester Sprinkel of Virginia Beach and Elizabeth and Adrian LaPraie of DeVille, La.; and abundant nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Alexander C. Yates. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
