JONESVILLE, Va. - Ruby Ellen Ely, of the Hurricane community in Jonesville, Va., was born Monday, May 18, 1914, in Lee County, Va., and passed away Thursday (Dec. 2, 2010) at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va., at the age of 96 years.
She had lived in Lee County, Va., her entire life.
Ruby was a homemaker and a member of the United Methodist Church in Jonesville, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gleaves Ely; parents, Cam Newman and Emma Jessee Newman; sisters, Molly Sewell, Byrd Warner and Bonnie Hopkins; brothers, Chris Newman, Barlow Newman and Oatie Newman; one son, James "Wayne" Ely; infant daughter, Emma Sue; two grandsons, JR Ely and TJ Ely; and one daughter-inlaw, Sherry Ely.
Ruby is survived by two sons, Carl G. Ely and wife, Gilda of Jonesville, Va., and Tom Ely and wife, Rita of Sneedville, Tenn.; grandchildren, James Ely, Jr. of Morristown, Tenn., Jeanice Pratt of Knoxville, Tenn., John Ely of Savannah, Ga., Joe Ely of Phoenix, Ariz., Paula DeMano of Manardville, Tenn., Tabitha Bales of Jonesville, Va., and Misty Ely Bigelow of Jonesville, Va.; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Cam Newman, Jr. and wife, Allie Byrd of Jonesville, Va.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. today until the time of the service at Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va.
The funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. today in the sanctuary of the funeral home with Rev. Lane Pennington officiating.
The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ely Family Cemetery in Jonesville, Va.
The family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 p.m. Sunday to go to the cemetery.
