- Frances Marie Bates Sowder, 88 years 11 months and 23 days of age, departed this life on Wednesday, June 24th, 2020.
Marie was born in Grundy, Kentucky on Wednesday, July 1st, 1931, daughter of the late William and Olga Placke Bates. Marie was a life long member of the Rock Lick Baptist Church, she was a kind lady who loved spending time with family and friends. Marie is greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Marie was survived by one daughter, Donna Marie Eaton of Somerset, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Deana Marie (and Jason) Skaggs of Jamestown, Kentucky, Brian (and Crystal) Sowder of Somerset, Kentucky, Sara (and Adam) Gress of Jasper, Indiana, Wesley Elizabeth Sowder of Louisville, Kentucky, and James Kelly (and Ashley) Sowder of Jasper, Indiana; eight great grandchildren, Jaycie Skaggs, Max J. Sowder, Nova Sowder, James Ryder, Gunner Stringer, Olivia Sowder, Lee Gress, and Sage Gress; two brothers, Edward Bates of Louisville, Kentucky and Johnny (and Freeda) Bates of Waterview, Florida; three sisters, Roberta Cundiff of Dayton, Ohio, and Dorothy Gilliam and Edna Mae Compton, both of Somerset, Kentucky; a sister-in-law, Katie Bates of Somerset, Kentucky; and a host of other family and friends who mourn her passing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Bates, who departed this life on July 3rd, 1958 and Olga Bates, who departed this life on February 22nd, 1966; her loving husband of 66 years, James Albert "Jack" Sowder, whom she married on March 25th, 1950 and who departed this life on May 30th, 2016; one son, James R. “Jim” Sowder, who departed this life on June 25th, 2008; five brothers, Alton Bates, Shorty Bates, Jeff Bates, Robert Bates, and Harold Bates; three sisters, Leta Bobbitt, Ola Jasper, and Effie Callahan; and a son-in-law, Myron "Bim" Eaton.
Visitations were held from 12:00 noon. until 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29th, 2020 at the Pulaski Funeral Home in Somerset, Kentucky.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29th, 2020 in the Chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home.
Burial followed in the Rock Lick Baptist Church Cemetery in Pulaski County, Kentucky.
