Allie Byrd Newman, 86, of Jonesville, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at Holston Valley Medical Center.
A native of Lee County, she was born October 18, 1927 to the late Nace and Estella Johnson Edwards. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Walter, Tom, Buford and N.R. Edwards, and four sisters, Edna Dales, Maggie Delph, Maude Ethel Edwards and Mary Barnes.
Allie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was also a dedicated caregiver to many and will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Cam Newman Jr.; daughters, Peggy Wilder and husband Wade, of Jonesville, and Emma Hensley and husband Roger, also of Jonesville; son, Richard Newman and wife Martha, of Kingsport, TN; sister, Gladys “Nell” Gibson, of Daytona Beach, FL; brother, Eugene “Gene” Edwards, of Blackstock, SC; grandchildren, Tammy Wright and husband John, Anthony Wilder and wife Vickie, Richard Scott Newman and wife Lisa, Barry Wilder and Eric Hensley; great-grandchildren, Justin, Aaron, Jordan, Austin, Peyton, Colton and Carrie; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12 until 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Robinette Funeral Home in Jonesville. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Thomas J. Delph officiating. Burial will follow in the Newman Cemetery.
