- OCEANA — Edith Garrett Hammond, 90, of Oceana, passed away Friday, July 27, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital.
Born Oct. 19, 1916, at Pennington Gap, Va., she was the daughter of the late Euell Garrett (Deceased) and Kyla Tomlinson-Garrett (Deceased).
Edith was a member of Oceana United Methodist Church. She attended Man High School and was chief deputy clerk for the Wyoming County circuit clerk. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker who enjoyed being with family and friends.
In addition to her parents, her first husband, Thelmer Trent (1906-1949), her second husband, Carl W. Hammond (1904-Deceased) whom she married on October 12, 1962 in Oceana, Wyoming County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Wyoming County, WV, 1962, Page 477, Application Date: October 1, 1962, a daughter, Caryl Trent (Deceased), a sister, Violet Garrett (Deceased), and a brother, Charles Edward Garrett (Deceased), preceded her in death.
Survivors include two stepdaughters, Carol Hammond-Fultz and her husband, Charles, of Leesville, S.C., and Nancy Hammond-Smith and her husband, David, of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Jerry Garrett and his wife, Bonnie, of Benton, Ariz.; two sisters, Betty Garrett of Oceana and Peggy Garrett-Markert of Quincy, Ill.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her loyal dog, Honey, her special caregiver, Gloria Rice, and host of loving nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her.
Service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug, 2, at Evans Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Gerald Kincaid officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
