Note: In the winter of 1825, John Henry, his wife, Nancy and their ten existing children, moved west from Johnston County, NC to Laurel County, KY. The trip, through the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee, was very arduous. The family probably spent one "growing season" in Tennessee.

LAUREL YOUTH SHOT CRITICALLY IN CLAY COUNTY
Edsel Hale, 29 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Hale of Blackwater, remains in a critical
condition at the Marymount Hospital with a gun shot wound in the abdomen and arm.
Robert G. Carnahan, 49 years old, Manchester business man, is charged with wounding Hale
at 3:45 o'clock Friday morning at a road house, 2 miles east of Manchester.
According to witnesses, Hale was shot as he stepped into the door of the establishment.
Carnahan surrendered voluntarily to Clay county jailer, J. Matt Sizemore about an hour after
the shooting.
The Clay countyman waived examining trial in Clay County Court Monday and was held to
the May grand jury of the Clay County Circuit Court.
Clay County Judge Charles H. White released Carnahan under a $5,000 bond and a
$5,000 appearance bond.
Hale's wife, Mrs. Lena Sasser Hale said at the hospital Tuesday afternoon that Hale,
an employee of General Electric in Louisville, was enroute from Louisville to Big Richlands
in Knox County where she and their 2 year old daughter, Sharon, were residing with her parents.
She added that her husband had rented an apartment in Louisville and that he was going to take
her and the daughter back to that city.
Carnahan's son, James Carnahan, 24, was killed two weeks ago when struck by an automobile.
His family said that he had been beside himself since that time.

Victor Hale, 75, Lida, died at 11:22 a.m. August 13 at Marymount Hospital. A native of Laurel County,
he was the son of Franklin J. and Lucinda Sasser Hale. Mr. Hale was a veteran of WW1 and a member of the Blackwater United Baptist Church. He was married to the former Allie Ledington, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ina Fay Hale, Mrs. Janice O'Neal and Miss Elma Lisle Hale, Lexington; two sons, Edsel Hale, Clarkston, Mich. and Maxwell Hale, Lida;
one sister, Mrs. Nannie Sasser, London and 12 grandchildren.
Services were held August 15 by the Revs. Layton Vanhook and Lowell Gilbert at House Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment was in Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tilmon Hale, Hobart Hale, Robert Ledington, Verlin Holt, Russell Mullins and Farrett Taylor.

MARY JANE ADAMS
Funeral services were held Monday at Laurel Funeral Home for Mary Jane Adams, 57, who died Friday at home.
She was the wife of Clarence Adams and the daughter of Allen Asher and Mae Asher.
Mary Jane Adams is survived by her mother and husband and children Joyce Bruner, Linda Woods, Gene Adams, Eddie DeWayne Adams and David Adams, London;
and brothers Coleman, Burton and Glen Asher, London; Ferrell Asher, Nashville; and Boby Asher, Indianapolis; and sisters Edith King, Nashville; Leeatrice Byrd, Florida and Wavelene Hammons, London.
She is also survived by 11 grandchildren.
The Rev. David Patton, the Rev. Harvey Taylor and the Rev. Johnny Benge officiated.
Burial was in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

LONDON CHILD KILLED IN IND. TRUCK MISHAP
A 13-month old London girl was killed in Scott County, Ind. at approximately 3:45 p.m. Saturday when a pickup truck that she had crawled under drove over her.
Melissa Gail Woods, daughter of Harold and Linda Sue Adams Woods, Route 8, London, died of a fractured skull according to Scott County Deputy Coroner James Buchanan.
Buchanan said that the Woods' family was fishing at Maryville (Ind.) Lake about 12 miles from Scottsburg, when the child wondered off and crawled under a truck.
The deputy coroner continued that Tunis Thompson, Route 4, North Vernon, Ind., not seeing the
tottler, got in the truck and backed it over her.
The child was born in Baltimore, MD on April 28, 1973.
Besides her parents, she is survived by a brother, Harold Douglas Woods;
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Woods, Route 8, London, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Adams, Lida;
and great grandparents, Mrs. Mae Asher, Lida, Mr. and Mrs. Terry Adams, Lida, and Mr. and Mrs. Churchill Smith, Route 8, Manchester.
Funeral services for the child were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the House Funeral Home Chapel with
Rev. Jesse Harrison officiating.
Burial was in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Lida.

PEARL ASHER
FORMER LAUREL RESIDENT
The funeral for former Laurel resident Pearl Asher was held at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Laurel Funeral Home Chapel.
Asher, 79, of Indianapolis died at St. Francis Hospital in that city Thursday Nov. 19, 1993.
Formerly of Laurel County, she was the daughter of the late Campbell and Cynthia Hampton Hale.
Asher is survived by one son, Ted Asher or Mesa, AZ;
two daughters, Mabel Christine Reidener and STella Marie Rogers, both of Indianapolis;
and two sisters, Beulah Perry of London and Betty Smith of Indianapolis.
Pallbearers were Carnell Rosser, Ernie Perry, Richard Hale, Glenn Asher, Paul Taylor and Alan Asher.
The Revs. Bill Wagers and Terry Gabbard officiated at the funeral.
Burial followed in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Blackwater.

William Casper Hale, 72, London Rt. 6, died at 2:45 a.m. Friday at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Corbin.
He was a native of Laurel Co., born Feb. 9, 1907, the son of the late Elmer and Ella Evans Hale.
He was a retired state employee and member of the First Baptist Church of London.
Survivors include his widow, the former Ollie Sasser;
two sons: William Conrad Hale, London Rt. 6; and Kenneth Ray Hale, Ft. Lauderdale, FL;
two sisers, Katherine Boyer, Lexington; and Bertie Young, London;

WALLACE SASSER CLAIMED IN DEATH
Mr. Wallace Sasser, 81 years old, retired farmer, died at 10:30 o'clock Monday morning at his home in Gibbs, KY, following a long illness with infirmities.
Funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon and interment followed in the Sasser Cemetery at Gibbs by the House Funeral Home.
A life-long resident of Laurel county, Mr. Sasser was first married to a Miss Williams and following her death he was wed to Cora Perry Sasser, who survives him.
He also leaves three daughters and three sons: Ida Hubbard, Knoxville; Lucy Sasser, Versailles, OK; C.W. Sasser and Stella Hale, Lewiston, OK; and Champ and Tom Sasser, both of Gibbs.

SERVICES HERE FOR J.T. HALE
Funeral services for James Thomas Hale, 85, Denver Colo., who died May 23 in the Old Masons
Home, were conducted at 7 o'clock Friday evening at the home of his son, Roy Hale, at Cold Hill
by the Revs. George Cole and Layton Vanhook.
Masonic rites were held at the grave the following morning at the grave in Pilgrim Rest Cemetery with the House Funeral Home in charge. Officiating were the Revs. Cole and William Stewart.
A Laurel County native, Mr. Hale was born July 2, 1870 at Bush, the son of Dr. J.T. Hale and Mrs. Mahala Sasser Hale. He was married to Cuie Tuttle, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Hale, a retired millwright, had been a resident of Colorado for the last twenty-nine years.
Besides the son, he is survived by five daughters, Mrs. W.H. Greene, London, Route 1; Mrs. J.R. Wilkerson, Junction City, Kansas; T.J. Green, Gadsden, ALA; Mrs. W.L. Clark, Corbin; Mrs. Roy Perry, Whitley City; and nineteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. He also leaves two sisters and three brothers, Mrs. John Mullins, Corbin; Mrs. Lloyd Burkhart, Lake; D.B. Hale, Lawton, OK; J.R. Hale, London; and Milford Hale, Cane Creek.

Mrs. Thomas M. Walden, after a long illness, died Sunday night at her home at Cane Creek, this county. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at the home by Rev. W.F. Brock, assisted by Rev. John Tuttle, followed by burial in the family cemetery.

Mrs. Ida Hale Walden was a daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. James Hale, a member of the Baptist church and was beloved by a host of friends.

Surviving are the husband and three children Messrs. Delmos and Delbert, well remembered in London as students in the Sue Bennett College and as the "Walden Twins," and Mrs. Violet Hopper, of Corbin.

Mrs. C.R. Jarvis and son, Everett, attended the funeral.

at the Marymount Hospital. She had been in ill health for two years.

of the late James and Nancy Williams Hale. She was a member of the
Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.

Route 4, London; and Clifford Bolton, IND; A sister, Fannie Walkins, Tuttle;

Funeral services for Mrs. Vida H. Pope, 91, of 508 Cedar Lane, Orangeburg, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 26, 2007, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg, with the Rev. Ben Herlong and the Rev. David Williamson officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Pope died Friday, March 23, at her residence.

She was born November 3, 1915, in St. Charles, Va., a daughter of the late Evan and Maude Coffman Hale. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She retired from Phillips Shoe Store. Mrs. Pope was married to the late Ralph D. Pope.

Survivors include four daughters, Mary Alice Pope of Orangeburg, Mrs. Sam (Kathryn) Ulmer of Lexington, Nancy Hutto and Gretchen Pope, both of Decatur, Ga.; six grandchildren, Ravel Ulmer, Renee' Mundy, Evan Hutto, Angela Mathis, Sheryl Hutto, and Wesley Hutto; seven great-grandchildren and a half-sister, Mattie Lou England of Indiana.

Friends may call at the residence, 508 Cedar Lane, and at Thompson Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at Thompson Funeral Home in Orangeburg.

Note from Vida Hale Pope

S/Sgt. Buck R Hale was working in the Norfolk shipyards when he was called to the service. His company offered to get him a deferment but he declined. Not wanting to have to kill anyone, he served as a medic. He arrived in Europe in the fall of 1944, just before the Battle of the Bulge. After the battle, his unit wound up in Holland where they hoped to get some rest. They had planned to sleep in a school, but the local towns people offered to house the men in their homes. S/Sgt Hale and two of his friends stayed with the Snyder family. Less than two weeks later he was killed. The Snyder family searched out his grave, took pictures and included them in a letter to his mother.

VINCENNES, Ind. - Syble Hale Ridings died peacefully on Friday (Nov. 1, 2002) at her daughter's home in Vincennes, Ind., after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. Ridings was born Feb. 9, 1923 in St. Charles, Va. She was the daughter of Maud Coffman Hale Sprinkle and Evan Hale. She attended elementary school in Tifton, Ohio, and graduated from St. Charles High School in 1942.
Mrs. Ridings was employed at the St. Charles Neighborhood Action Center for several years before retiring from Lee County Community Hospital. She was a long-time member of the First Christian Church in Pennington Gap, Va.
She was married to the late Claude Ridings of St. Charles, and had four children; Philip Ridings of Indianapolis, Ind., Phyllis Carling of Vincennes, Ind., Betty Dizney of Dryden, Va., and Ray Ridings of Roanoke, Va. Two brothers, Evan and Ravle Hale, preceded her in death.
She is survived by one sister, Vida Pope of Orangeburg, S.C.; a half sister, Mattie Lou England of Gas City, Ind.; and a half brother, Ed Sprinkle of Marion, Ind. She had six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be this evening and all day Monday at the home of Mike and Betty Dizney in Dryden, Va.
Services will be conducted by Kenneth Kehrer at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Pennington Gap, Va.

Born November 8, 1915, he was a retired farmer and member of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rebecca (Higgins) Hale and Sid Hale; and his wife, Otie (Smith) Hale. Survivors include two daughters, Pansy Williams and Rebecca Williams, both of London, Ky.; a son, Charles Hale of Carmi, Illinois; a sister, Geneva Looney of New Miami, Ohio; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Otis Bolton, 81, of East Bernstadt, Kentucky, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, Kentucky. Born April 9, 1922, in Laurel County, Kentucky, he was a Kentucky Department of Transportation employee, a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II, and was a member of the Old Path Holiness Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nannie (Hale) Bolton and John Bolton.

Survivors include his wife, Reba (Short) Bolton of East Bernstadt, Kentucky; five daughters, Mary Sizemore of London, Kentucky, Eulene Asher of Andrew, Indiana, Louise Dixon of Columbus, Indiana, Irene Asher and Ruth Carrol, both of Dalton, Georgia; three sons, Charles Bolton of Wabash, Indiana, Merle Bolton and Don Bolton, both of Dalton, Georgia; a sister, Roxie Witt of Corbin, Kentucky; a brother, Clifford Bolton of Indiana; 23 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.

Hayden Watkins, 79, London, Ky., died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006 at Oak Tree Hospital in Corbin. He was born Oct. 27, 1927 at Tuttle in Laurel County, to the late Dan and Fannie Hall Watkins. After completing public school there, he served 18 months with the Signal Corps of the United States Army. He attended Eastern Kentucky State University and graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1951 with a B.S. degree in agriculture. From October 1953 to February 1962, he was employed by the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. During this time, he did graduate study at George Washington University. In 1952, he took sabbatical leave for additional graduate study. He received the M.S.A. degree from the University of Kentucky cooperative extension service as area extension agent and state specialist in turf. From August 1976 to November 1988, he served as area environmental director for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He was a past president of the Somerset Lions Club and a member of the American Society of Agronomy. Survivors his wife Regina Dalton Watkins, London, Ky., and one sister, Maize Sativiski, Gary, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Delmar Watkins. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church with Rev. Roger Wolfe and Rev. Mary Alice Pope, 89, of Orangeburg passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, after an extended illness.


A funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel, 1012 Whitman Street, Orangeburg. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 2720 Broughton St, Orangeburg. Rev. Dr. Beth Yarborough will be officiating.


The family will receive friends from 3:30-4:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel prior to the funeral service.


Pallbearers will be Jerry Lewis, Hugh Roberts, Justin Smith, Justin Ulmer, Andrew Mathius and Ravel Ulmer.


Miss Pope was born on April 30, 1932, in St. Charles, VA. She was the eldest of four girls born to the late Ralph Pope and the late Vida Hale Pope. She worked for many years as a secretary for a local optician. She enjoyed reading in her spare time and watching Clemson Tiger football.


Survivors include her sisters, Gretchen Pope of Decatur, Nancy Hutto both of Decatur, GA, Kathryn Ulmer of Lexington, S.C. and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.


The family would like to thank Grove Park Hospice and especially, Vickie, Buck, Karen, Tammy, Rev. Beth and Tina for their compassionate care of Miss Pope during the last several months.

Charles H. Chance, age 73, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2020.

Charlie began his career with TVA over 40 years ago as a home inspector in the 1970’s. He returned to college in the early 1980’s to gain knowledge in the increasing world of computers and technology and then was promoted to computer programmer. He loved his job and retired from TVA as a network administrator.

Charlie grew up on the lakes of Tennessee helping his fathers’ work as a zoologist. He was an avid outdoorsman before his health became an issue. Among many outdoor activities, boating, and camping ranked as his favorite while enjoying nature.

Preceded in death by parents, Jack and Edna Chance; wife, Karen Parks Chance.

Survived by son, Allen Chance and wife Patti; daughter, Susan Chance Mintz and husband Jeremy; grandchildren, Charles Enrique Chance, Alejandro James Chance, Paulo Santiago Chance, Thomas Jackson Mintz, Elijah Charles Mintz, Austin Dennis Norton; sister, Nancy Chance Mitchell and husband Kelvin; nephew, Nathan Brown.

Coleman Vernon Hale, 85, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at St. Joseph Hospital in London.
He is survived by his children, David Hale (Amy) of Bridgeville, Delaware, and Debbie Kidwell of Highland Heights, KY; two grandsons, Cameron & Bryan; one great grandchild, Destinee; sister, Joy Hill (Larry); two special friends, Jimmy & Gigi Pennington; and many other family and friends to mourn his passing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie & Mary Tuttle Hale; paternal grandparents, Sid & Rebecca Hale; maternal grandparents, Evan & Doxie Tuttle; and a sister, Patricia Hale Liford.
He was a 1955 graduate of Bush High School. After graduating, he attended diesel mechanic school in Nashville, Tennessee. He then moved to Hamilton, Ohio where he worked at Champion Paper Company before moving to work at Armco Steel until his retirement.
After retiring, he returned to London where he farmed until his health would no longer permit.
He was an avid fisherman, especially favoring Norris Lake, Buckhorn Lake, and Lake Erie. He also loved to hunt, bowl, play basketball, and golf.
Funeral services for Coleman Vernon Hale were held on Sunday, July 9, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of House-Rawlings Funeral Home with Roger Wolfe and Chris Brock officiating. Burial followed at the Hale Cemetery in London, Kentucky. The family has entrusted House-Rawlings Funeral Home with the arrangements.

Tuttle. The great granddaughter of William Evan Tuttle and Doxie Chadwell,
(sister of Lucy Chadwell Sasser), and James M. Hale and Nancy J. Williams.
She is descended from John Henry Sasser through his daughter Nancy Sasser
Williams.
Patty was involved in at boating accident on Laurel Lake. She fell
overboard and her body was never recovered. She has been missing since 1976,
declared dead in 1982. She left two children; Regina Beth Liford and Dennis
Liford. The circumstances of her death are considered somewhat of a mystery
to her family. The full details of the accident have never been disclosed by
the other people on the boat, in fact the investigation of the whole matter
were hushed up. If anyone has any information on her death, it would be a
comfort to her children and siblings.
Her daughter, "Gina" was visiting me just two weeks ago, here in
northern Indiana. She is currently a student at the University of Kentucky.
She will be a dentist. She graduated from Union College last year in
Barbourville, after being elected Homecoming Queen. She is both beautiful
and intelligent, having won numerous beauty and talent contests, and
graduated both high school and college with honors.
She and her brother were raised by her Aunt Joyce "Joy" Hale Hill, her
father, Dennis Liford, Sr., but primarily by her second cousin Hayden Watkins
(great grandson of Nancy Sasser Williams) and his wife Regina, whom Regina
(Gina) was named. Hayden and Regina live at the "Old Sasser Place," the old
homestead of James M. Sasser and Minnie M. Humfleet in Tuttle, LCK.
Dennis Liford is married, has no children and lives with is wife in
Corbin. Her sister Joy Hale Hill and brother Coleman Hale live in the Tuttle
community, LCK.

William "Bill" Looney passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2021. He was born May 20,1949 in Indianapolis, Indiana to William M. and Geneva (Hale) Looney. Bill retired from AK Steel after 36 years of service, being at the New Miami Plant, Middletown Tubing Department, and Transportation Trucks. Bill devoted his time to his wife, Clara, till her time of death and his grandchildren. Bill enjoyed working in the yard, and doing many other activities with many great friends he met in life. Bill is survived by his son, Matt (Brandy) Looney, grandchildren, Sabrina Roberson, Makenzie Looney and Bryson Looney, brother-in-law, Charles (Millie) Hathaway, best friends of Makenzies Brenna Neff and Seiarra Neff and long time friends of the family, Shaun, Rhonda Butcher and Laura Newsome. Bill is preceded in death by his wife and love of 46 years, Clara, his mother, Geneva and father, William M.. Visitation will be at the Home Ave. First Church of God, 426 Home Ave., Trenton, Ohio 45067 on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 from 11:00 AM to time of service at 1:00 PM with Pastor Todd Wallen officiating.

He was a native of New Jersey, the son of Alonzo Charles Whitt and Roxie Bolton Whitt.
He was a foundry worker. He is survived by his mother, Roxie Bolton Whitt, Lily and the following sisters and brothers: Lonnie June Marcum, Summan, Indiana; Joann Heald, Chattanooga, Tennessee; Flora Mae McFadden and Eugene Whitt, London and Earl Whitt, Lily. Funeral services were held in the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles R. Kirby officiating.
Burial was in Hale Cemetery, Blackwater, by Bowling Funeral Home.

ma Sue Duvall VALPARAISO/BLACK OAK - Ima Sue Duvall, beloved daughter, mother, and mamaw, was called to her awaited heavenly home on Sunday, January 27, 2019. She was born in Laurel County, KY on December 29, 1938 to Delmer and Polly Watkins. Ima Sue was raised in Black Oak, now Gary, where she attended school and met and married her sweetheart Raymond L. Duvall January 14, 1955. In 1986 the Duvall's purchased a small farm in Porter County where they fulfilled their lifelong dream of country living and love for animals. Together, they especially enjoyed traveling to equine parks, camping in their old RV, trail rides, and participating in local parades on their prized horses. Sue and Ray shared 56 years of marriage together, and he has been awaiting her heavenly arrival since his passing in 2011. She had many fond memories of her time working for R.J. Connor & VNA of Porter County for 20 years. Ima Sue treasured the sweet memory of accepting Christ at young age during a Salvation Army VBS and has left a lifelong legacy for all who know her. She was a long time member of Eastlake Baptist Church in Crown Point, Indiana where she volunteered and taught Sunday School until illness caused her to become homebound in 2011. Her immense love for Bible teaching and Southern Gospel Music was known by all, and she was one of the greatest prayer warriors this side of Heaven. Ima Sue leaves behind to carry on her legacy three children Colman Mark (Rita), Stephanie (Charlie) Spudic-Ward, and Angela (Keith) Schweder; grandchildren Amanda (Eric) Ginther, Tyler Spudic, Tabitha (Mike) Somers, Brittany (Shawn), and Carson Albertson; step-grandchildren Corey and Ryan Ashcraft and Brian Ward; 18 great grandchildren; brother, Ravel and Christine Watkins London, KY; several nieces and nephews and special friends. Also remembering her memorable friends who have gone before her. Her prayer was that others would know Jesus and would meet her there. To celebrate her homegoing, friends and family are invited to attend visitation at MOELLER FUNERAL HOME Friday, February 1, 2019 from 3:00-7:00 PM. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM at Eastlake Baptist Church 7121 E. Lincoln Hwy (Route 30) in Crown Point Saturday, February 2, 2019 with visitation from 9:30 AM until the time of the funeral service, Rev. Ben Hammond officiating.
