Why the family moved to Lee Co VA?

In 1901 the Yellow Creek Coal and Lumber Company was formed with E. S. Helburn, Joe Bosworth, J. G. Fitzpatrick and A. H. Rennebaum as owners of the company. These men, known locally as "The Yellow Creek Crowd" were active and influential civic leaders for many years. Their families were close friends with their wives working together on community activities and their children often intermarried. The strength of these men and others who owned the mines kept many of the mines operating as non-union mines for years.

In 1910, mine operators in District 19 refused to sign the UMWA contract when it came up for renewal. By 1919, there was again a strike to force the recognition of the UMWA in the mines. In 1921, the UMWA called a general strike that lasted into 1922. This idled twelve to fifteen thousand miners in the area. Nonunion miners who tried to work were threatened and even fired upon. Eventually all the mines were closed.
Finally the strike was settled and miners returned to work. In 1924, District 19 broke with the UMWA and accepted a reduction in wages. Then the depression hit and times were tough for all. Times remained unsettled through the 1930’s with boom and bust years for the coal industry.

Andrew Johnson Ridings. Sr., 77 year old resident of Duff, Tenn., Route 1, died suddenly at his home yesterday at 8 a.m. He was born in Goins, Tenn., to son of the late David and Maurine Tolliver Ridings. He was married to Miss Dora Jane Hopper on December 17, 1905. He was a member of the UMWA, Fonde Local Union 1905. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Middlesboro Lodge number 298. He was last employed by the Clear Fork Coal Company at Fonde and retired from mining 12 years ago. He had lived at Duff for the past 14 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dora Jane Ridings, Duff, Tenn., Route 1; sons Clarence Ridings of Cumberland Gap, Eugene Ridings of Bellingham, Wash. Andrew J Ridings of Independence, Mo.; daughters, Mrs. Lee Walker of Duff, Mrs. Mildred McCulley of Middlesboro and Mrs. Dewey Davis of Adrian. Mich.; brother Crockett Ridings of Tazewell; 22 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at the Cawood Funeral Home. Cawood Funeral Home in charge.

Ruby O. Keck, 90, of Monroe died at 12:20 a.m. Sunday in her home. She had been in poor health for six months. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Rupp Funeral Home. She will lie in state from 10 until services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Roy Southerland, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle. Born Dec. 7, 1915, in Union County, Tenn., she was the daughter of Calvin and Margaret (Lyons) Tolliver. She married Charles Shackleford in 1931, in Claiborne County, Tenn. She then married Estil Keck on March 28, 1939, in Bowling Green, Ohio. He died Sept. 8, 1985. Mrs. Keck worked for Consolidated Paper Co. and then on the Manhattan Project in Oakridge, Tenn. For 25 years, she was a nurse's aide at Mercy Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1989. She was a member of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church since 1938. Surviving are three sons, Bill (Joyce) Shackleford of Longview, Texas, Gary Keck of Monroe and Larry (Mary Jean) Keck of Belleville; three daughters, Lorraine Diker of Fort Wayne, Ind., Janice (Bill) Hatfield of Monroe and Sharon (Rick) Thomason of Johnson City, Tenn.; two brothers, James (Elsie) of Monticello, Ky., and J.C. (Janie) of Williamsburg, Ky.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her second husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Harold Shackleford; three brothers, Ulys, Julius and Kenneth; four sisters, Frankie Bryant, Ella Mae Smith, Isora Tolliver and an infant, and two granddaughters, Christina Lower and Amy Thomason. Coba O. Collins was born in Claiborne County, Tennessee on October 31, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Robert Matthew Collins and Hulda (Tolliver) Collins. Coba was 93 years old at the time of her passing. She had been a patient at the Hospice, Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. Coba grew up working the family farm and she married in 1934 at the age of 16 to Foister Keck. From this union came the birth of four children: Gene, L.M., Billy Ray, and Betty. The family moved to Michigan in 1948. Coba supported her family as a Nurse's Aide. She was employed from 1965 until her retirement in 1987 by Mercy Memorial Hospital. For more than fifty years Coba was a faithful member of the Monroe Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, her passing was preceded by a son: Billy Ray Keck; a daughter-in-law: Jean Keck; a brother: Conda Collins; and a great-great grandson: Gary A. Keck.
To cherish her memory Coba leaves three children: Eugene, (Gene) Keck of Monroe, L.M. (Faye) Keck of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Betty Keck of Monroe; two brothers: Robert Matthew (Hilda) Collins of Port Clinton, Ohio, and Raymond (Ann) Collins of New Tazewell, Tennessee; a sister-in-law: Mae Collins of Morristown, Tennessee; five grandchildren: Roger, Mark, Mike, Kenny, and David Keck; nine great grandchildren: Ryan, Danny, Lucas, Chad, Kaitlyn, Eric, Damon, Chelsea, and Brittney; and five great-great grandchildren.

She was a member of the Dryden Baptist Church in Dryden, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Cloud; parents, W.H. and Rachel Shelton Ridings; one sister, Ceonia Ridings; 10 brothers, Luther, Willie, Clifford, Andrew (Nig), Julius, Richard, James (Snook), Claude, Odie and Charles Ridings.

Clides is survived by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, many nieces, nephews, her church family, and many friends and special friends and caregivers, Peggy and Bud Stidham.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in the sanctuary of the funeral home with the Rev. Henry (Bud) Stidham officiating.

Burial will follow at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Richard Ridings, age 83, died at his Noblesville home January 12, 2002.
Ridings was a disables Army veteran of World War II. He received the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, an American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and EPO Ribbon. He was a life member of V.F.W. Post 6246 of Noblesville.

He was born February 20, 1918, in Bryson, Tennessee to the late W.H. and Rachel (Shelton) Ridings. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by ten brothers and a sister.

His wife Nell I. (Stapleton) Ridings, lives in Noblesville, as do his daughters, Carolyn Gibson, Wanda Lockhart and Patty Miles. A sister Clides Cloud, lives in Woodway, Va. He is also survived by serveral nieces and nephews, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation was January 14 at Randall and Roberts Funeral Home, Noblesville. Services were January 15 at the funeral home, Pastor Mark Lowe officiating. Burial was at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens , Fishers.

HAROGATE, Tenn. — Mabel Hallie Ridings Billingsley, 87, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at Claiborne County Nursing Home.

She was born June 13, 1920, in Goins, Tenn., to the late A.J. Ridings and Dora Hopper Ridings. She was saved at an early age and was a member of the Pump Springs Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years John Billingsley; two sons, Ralph and Ronnie Billingsley; son-in-law, Ben Taylor; one grandchild, Tommy Billingsley and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include the following: two daughters, Gloria Taylor, Harrogate, Dixie Billingsley, Harrogate; daughter-in-law, Lurlean Billingsley, Harrogate; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Creech Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Casper “Tip” Moore presiding.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Kybert Cemetry in Arthur, Ten., with her grandsons serving as pallbearers.

The family of Ms. Billingsley will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Creech Funeral Home Chapel.

Creech Funeral Home, Middlesboro, is in charge of all arrangements.

Andrew J. Ridings, 77, Independence, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Ridings was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Fork Ridge, Tenn. He was a coal miner for the Clear Fork Coal Co. before moving to Independence. He retired from the Care Free Rock quarry in 1985. He was a member of the Waldo Baptist Church and the National Rifle Association.

His survivors include his wife of 59 years, Olive Ridings, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Dave Reeve; two grandsons, Steve Reeve and Mike Reeve and his wife, Cindy, all of Independence; three great-grandsons, Brandan Reeve, Joey Reeve Barker and Troy Ingrassia; and two sisters, Mabel Billingsley, Harrogate, Tenn., and Beulah Davis, Sidney, Ohio.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Gertrude was born to the late Crockett and Bertha Ridings, she was one of ten children and loved her family dearly. She married the love of her life Kenneth Edmondson on April 22, 1955. She was a loving wife, mother, granny, great granny, great-great granny, and friend to all. Gertrude was saved at a very young age and was a member of First Baptist Church in New Tazewell. She was known in the community as Granny Gertrude and Tootsie. Gertrude spent many years as a nurse for Dr. Smith in New Tazewell. She loved her patients like she loved her family. Gertrude was an avid fisher and liked nothing better than sitting on the lake bank. She lived life to the fullest and leaves behind many, many stories.

Gertrude is preceded in death by her parents Crockett and Bertha Ridings. Husband of 67 years, Kenneth Edmondson. Siblings Frank Ridings, Jay Ridings, Bessie Dozier, Ted Ridings, Lee Roy Ridings, Warren Ridings, Wanda Carper, and David Ridings. Son-in-law Mike O'Dell.

She is survived by brother Earl (Barbara) Ridings. Children Carolyn O'Dell, Jim (Debbie) Edmondson, Patty (Eric) Starnes, and Janet (Scott) Housley. Lee Roy Ridings was born June 3rd, 1938 in Pioneer, TN; the son of Henry David Ridings and Bertha Lee Rutherford Ridings. He was Baptist by faith. He served his country in the United States Air Force as an Airman. He was the owner of Ridings Auto Service in Greenville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 55 years, Betty Ridings.

He is survived by his children, Ellen (Mike) Yeager of Greenville and David Ridings of Greenville; four siblings, Earl (Barbara) Ridings of Tazewell, TN, David Ridings of Griffin, GA; Guertrude Edmaison of Tazewell, TN, and Wanda Carper of New Castle, IN; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and special friend, Lois Ray.

Mr. Warren C. Ridings, age 73, of Milner, passed away Monday, January 25, 2016, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. Mr. Ridings was born January 29, 1942 in Pioneer, Tennessee, son of the late Crockett and Bertha Rutherford Ridings. He was a member of Meridian Sun Lodge No. 26, F.&A.M. and retired plant manager of Sybil Mills (Signal Mills) in Griffin. Mr. Ridings was a veteran of the U.S. National Guard. He loved genealogy and enjoyed fishing and sewing.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Teresa Ridings of Milner; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Jeff Stone of Barnesville; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Rachel Ridings of Milner; grandchildren, Taylor Stone, Logan Ridings, Hope Stone, Lisa Smith Bledsoe and her husband, Brian; Dylan Smith; four great-grandchildren, Bethany Fuller, Sage Bledsoe, Bradley Bledsoe, and Ryleigh Mae Smith; sisters and brothers, Gertrude Edmondson, Leroy Ridings, Earl Ridings, Wanda Carper, and David Ridings; numerous nieces and nephews; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers and sister, Frank Ridings, Ted Ridings, Jay Ridings and Bessie Dozier

David Nathaniel “Red” Ridings 7/11/1950-8/7/2019 Age 69, passed away on August 7th, 2019. Beloved son of the late Henry David ‘Crockett’ Ridings and Bertha Rutherford Ridings.

Proud to be the youngest of ten children, he is survived by sisters Gertrude and Wanda and brother Earl. Father of Amy (James) Ruehl, Jennifer (Frederick) Allen, Eric (Rebecca), Frances (Daniel) Wood, and Steven. Grandfather to ten, and Uncle to many extended nieces, and nephews.
