George Ray, 74, Route 1, Ashland, died at 9:55 last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Osha Boggs, 2332 Greenup Avenue,following an illness of six weeks.

A resident of Ashland for the past 35 years, Mr. Ray was born in Carter County, Ky., April 6, 1874, a son of Lark and Polly Ann Newman Ray.

The body is at the John Steen Funeral Home, where friends may call after 10 a.m. tomorrow. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Cam Newman Jr., 93, of Jonesville, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Lee Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born April 10, 1922 in Jonesville to the late Cam and Emma Jesse Newman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Allie Byrd Edwards Newman; four sisters, Mollie Sewell, Nancy Byrd Warner, Ruby Ely and Bonnie Hopkins; and three brothers, Chris, Oatie and Barlow Newman Sr.

Cam was a 1942 graduate of Jonesville High School and was a lifetime farmer. He was a member of Jonesville Methodist Church but attended Thompson Settlement Baptist Church. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by two daughters, Peggy Wilder and husband Wade, of Jonesville, and Emma Hensley and husband Roger, also of Jonesville; son, Richard Newman and wife Martha, of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Tammy Wright and husband John, Anthony Wilder and wife Vickie, Richard Scott Newman and wife Lisa, Barry Wilder and Eric Hensley; great-grandchildren, Justin, Aaron, Jordan, Austin, Peyton, Colton and Carrie; and several nieces and nephews.

Carl W. Newman, age 99 3/4, of Gate City, VA went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at his residence following a period of declining health. Carl was born in Roda, Virginia on November 18, 1919, a son of the late ElKanah “EK” and Mattie Mae Kegley Newman. His family moved to Exeter, Virginia where he grew up. He graduated from Appalachia High School in 1937. He was a talented baseball player who was known as “Lefty” and received several offers to play professional ball.

He then attended Berea College in Berea, Kentucky where he graduated in 1943 with honors, majoring in math and physics. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended Officers Training School at Columbia University, New York. He was headed to the Pacific on a destroyer named the “Colahan” where he was the Gunnery Officer. At the end of the war, he was present at the signing of the Peace Treaty. His ship escorted the Japanese ships into Tokyo Bay. After the war, he attended University of Virginia Law School in Charlottesville and graduated in 1949. Carl practiced law for over 30 years. He was a membe of Gate City United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for over 40 years. Carl was a former member of the VA State Bar Association and Scott County Bar Association.

Carl was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Blanche Calton Newman; loving son, Woody Calton Newman, and all of his sisters and brothers.

He is survived by his loving daughter and son- in- law, Suzanne and Terry Goins; special niece, Opal Brown; several nieces and nephews; special sister-in-law, Jenny Barton.

Graveside Services will be 12:00 noon Saturday, August 31, 2019, at Holston View Cemetery with Rev. Gordon McBride and Rev. Tony Nunley officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Hammond Post 3/265 and Virginia National Guard. For those wishing to attend, please meet at the cemetery at 11:50 AM. A Celebration of Life service is planned at a future date.

She was born in Roda, Va., and had been a resident of the Kingsport area since 1947. Mrs. Hawkins was a member of Indian Springs Baptist Church and retired from Kings Department Store. Prior to her retirement she also worked at S.H. Kress in downtown Kingsport.

Wesley Bailie, 88, St. Charles, Va., passed away Sunday (April 23, 2000) at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center in Kingsport. Born in St. Charles, Va., he was the son of the late John Wesley and Alice Newman Bailie. During World War II, he worked for the shipyards in Baltimore, Md. He came back to Lee County and worked in various coal mines for over 40 years and was a member of the Local Union 8761 of U.M.W.A. He was a member of the First Christian Church in St. Charles.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Earl Bailie; one grandchild, Carla Griffith Kelly; three brothers, Bill, Thurman and Sam; two sisters, Carrie Reach and Georgia Turner.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Lillian Bailie, St. Charles, Va.; one son, Joe Bailie, Eaton, Ohio; three daughters, Joan Griffith, Okeechobee, Fla., Reida Sorah, Atlanta, Ga., Pam Hall, Ewing, Va.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at St. Charles United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roy Corbin officiating.
Mr. Bailie will be taken to the church one hour before services.
Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.
Pallbearers will be Darrell Sorah Jr., John Sorah, Steven Griffith, Thomas Griffith, Chris Kelly, Mike Sprinkle, Rob Russell and Jack Turner.

Norris Kelly Newman
Norris Kelly Newman, age 92, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at Bristol Health and Rehab following a short illness. Mr. Newman was born and raised in St. Charles, Va. but lived most of his life in Bristol, Va. He attended Hiawassee College, Lincoln Memorial University and was a graduate of East TN State University. He was a retired school teacher having taught at Valley Institute Elementary in Washington County, Va. for 20 years. Mr. Newman was a member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church for over 55 years where he was a past Sunday School teacher and board member. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Frances Newman; his parents, Noah and Elizabeth Newman; sister, Nell Witt and a brother, Jack Newman. Survivors include three daughters, Jacquelin E. Jones and husband, George of Afton, Tenn., Carol A. Jones and husband, David of Columbia, S.C. and Linda N. Morris and husband, Joe of Bristol, Tenn; grandchildren, Angela White and husband, Scott, Ginger Jones, Allen Jones, Kevin Jones and wife, Becky, Mark A. Jones and wife, Rachel, Jonathan Bednar and Badi Montgomery; four great-grandchildren, Betsy and Chase Williams, Cole Porter and Annabelle Jones; two nephews, Kent Witt and Dennis Witt and cousin, George R. Kelly The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Anderson Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barbara Doyle officiating. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 3 p.m., Saturday in Lee Memorial Gardens, (Lee County) Woodway, Va.
