    Lucile Atkins Hicks, 94, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2009, in Farmville, Va. She was born in Wethersfield, Ill., but lived most of her life in Virginia. She was a graduate of Marion College and Radford University. Her life was spent as a teacher in the Public Schools of Virginia. She taught 38 years in Smyth and Giles Counties. She retired in 1975. Mrs. Hicks was the wife of Paul P. Hicks. They had one son, Dr. Paul P. Hicks Jr., a dentist in Farmville, Va. Survivors are Paul P. Hicks Jr. and his wife, Patricia Hicks; two grandchildren, Paul P. Hicks III (Trey and his wife, Meg), and Laura H. Coombe; along with one great-grandson, Lleyton Coombe. Also surviving is a sister, Marilyn A. Heston, of Illinois. Mrs. Hicks resided in Farmville, Va., since 1999. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Dr. Fred Austin officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion, Va.

    She was preceded in death by her husband Mose C. Helton.

    Left to cherish her memories are her daughter Brenda Overbay & husband Weldon of Marion, VA; special grandson Jim Overbay & wife Hope of Christiansburg, VA; three special great-grandchildren Walker, Garrett, and Kelsey Overbay; along with several nieces, nephews, and friends to include special niece Rita Martin of Radford, VA, and special friend Margaret Linford of Marion.

    Visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 PM on Monday, March 20, 2023, from the Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM with Rev. John Langham officiating. Graveside services will immediately follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Alva Atkins; her husband of 56 years, Albert Ludlow Teany; daughter-in-law, Sharlene C. Teany; and son-in-law, David A. Martin, Sr. Survivors include her son, George (Rick) Teany of Radford; daughter, Rita T. Martin of Christiansburg; grandchildren, T.J. Teany of Christiansburg, David (Andy) and Teresa Martin of Check, and Kelly Martin of Radford; great-grandchildren, Logan Teany, Conner Martin, Kimberly Martin and Katie Martin; sister, June Helton of Wytheville; aunt, Sadie Repass of Atkins; sisters-in-law, Mary (Bill) Peterman, Sis Duncan, Mary Francis Teany all of Christiansburg, and Sally Boles of Roanoke; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Margery was known for her willingness to care for others, her hard work in her vegetable garden, and the many kettles of apple butter making that was always a great (social event) All was shared with family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at the Old Brick Presbyterian Church on Rock Road with Pastor Robert Morris officiating. Interment will follow in Teany Family Cemetery in Christiansburg. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday evening at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Old Brick Presbyterian Church or to Riner Volunteer Rescue Squad. The Teany family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford, Virginia.

    ATKINS, Va. Doris Kate Atkins Copenhaver, age 94, died on Monday, January 8, 2018. She was born on December 14, 1923, to the late George and Mary Evelyn Atkins. Doris was valedictorian of the Atkins High School class of 1940. She received a degree from Marion College, Radford University, and her Master's from University of Virginia. She was a teacher in the Virginia public school system for 44 years. She began in a one room school house on Nick's Creek, and was art director for the kindergartens of Smyth County. Doris continued in public education as Assistant Principal at Marion Primary then returned to teaching at Atkins Elementary for the remainder of her teaching career. She often covered the bill for students to be able to attend many school trips, including many Senior trips. For the next 5 years she evaluated new teachers all over Southwest Virginia. Doris was a lifetime member of Davis Memorial United Methodist Church, often playing piano and organ. After retirement, she and her husband Hugh enjoyed traveling all over the country with Abbot Trailways. Wherever she went, Doris made friends and left a lasting impression. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Harold Hugh Copenhaver; and brother and sister-in-law, John and Marjorie Atkins. Doris is survived by a special niece, Sherry Russell and husband, Buster; special great-niece, Lisa Maloyed, all of Atkins, Va.; nephews, Dr. J. David Atkins and wife, Rennie, of Abingdon, Va., and Ben Atkins and wife, Judy, of Atkins, Va. Many great and great-great-nieces and nephews, former students, colleagues, church family and friends also survive. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Reverend Harry Howe and the Reverend Rebecca Reed officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 11, 2018, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. He was a member of Davis Memorial United Methodist Church where he served in several capacities. Mr. Atkins was an Engineer with Brunswick Defense Plant for over 30 years. He was a farmer in the Atkins Community and was the owner of Atkins Construction Company.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Hall Atkins.

    He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Buster Russell of Atkins, Virginia; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dave and Rennie Atkins of Abingdon, Virginia, and Ben and Judy Atkins of Atkins, Virginia; one sister and two brothers-in-law, Doris and husband, Hugh Copenhaver of Atkins, Virginia and Charlie Bill Hall of Florida; one sister-in-law, Frances Hudson of Glen Burnie, Maryland; seven grandchildren, Lisa Maloyed, Ben Atkins, Sarah Smallwood, Jonathan Atkins, Joshua Atkins, Jordan Atkins and Katilyn Atkins; several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Funeral Services will be at Davis Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Frank Bauman and Rev. Donna Hester officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion, Virginia. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service and Crematory is serving the Atkins Family.

Shirley was a graduate of Radford College and taught first grade at Marion Primary School for 27 years, teaching over 700 children to read and write. She was also active in the Red Cross and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Smyth County. She was an expert seamstress and quilter, as well as a gifted piano player. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kelly and Fannie Atkins Williams. Shirley is survived by her husband, William D. "Bill" Smith of Marion; son, David G. Smith and wife, Lisa, of Waxhaw, N.C.; sister, Jean Hash of Atkins, Va.; grandson, Samuel Smith; niece, Barbara Moore; and nephews, Doug, Pat and Bobby Hash. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion.
