Lola Elizabeth Basos, age 101 years old, passed away at home with her daughter, Marena and dear friend, Rose, by her side on January 15, 2021. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Daniel Basos, by a brother, five sisters and her son-in-law, William Gonz.

She is survived by her daughter, Marena Gonz of Binghamton, her son and daughter-in-law, John and Virginia Sauer-Basos of Lafayette, CA; her grandson, Michael Alexander Basos of Lafayette, CA; special several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends, especially at Riverside Towers.

Lola enjoyed being a stay-at-home wife and mother until her husband died in 1963. She then took over her husband's insurance business, The Basos Insurance Agency, and worked as a licensed insurance broker for the next twenty-five years in Binghamton. She grew and maintained her business in a "man's world" by delivering insurance policies to each of her customers in person to get to know them as people.

She was a member of the Zonta Club, the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Eastern Star, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Trinity Memorial Church where she served as a member of the Altar Guild. She also served as a volunteer at Lourdes Hospital.

Lola enjoyed antiquing and was a talented quilter for over fifty years. She sewed each quilt by hand as she learned to do from her mother as she grew up in Arkansas. In her retirement years, she became an avid golfer and was a member of several golf leagues where she won many tournaments. She also enjoyed travelling. She and Marena would take a mother/daughter trip each summer. Her most favorite trip was the trip they took to Paris, France, but she also loved going to Hawaii, Acapulco, Montreal, the Grand Tetons, British Columbia, and many of the United States. Another memorable trip was one she took driving across the country.

After she retired, Lola spent summers in Binghamton and winters at Leisure World, a retirement community, in Mesa, AZ. There she enjoyed golfing, walking, the companionship of many good friends, and many cultural activities. She had a fantastic sense of humor and lived life to the fullest! She was quite UNFORGETTABLE, and her strength and bravery were noteworthy. She faced challenges with grace and dignity and was a role model for those who knew her.

Funeral services for Mrs. Vida H. Pope, 91, of 508 Cedar Lane, Orangeburg, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 26, 2007, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg, with the Rev. Ben Herlong and the Rev. David Williamson officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Pope died Friday, March 23, at her residence.

She was born November 3, 1915, in St. Charles, Va., a daughter of the late Evan and Maude Coffman Hale. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She retired from Phillips Shoe Store. Mrs. Pope was married to the late Ralph D. Pope.

Survivors include four daughters, Mary Alice Pope of Orangeburg, Mrs. Sam (Kathryn) Ulmer of Lexington, Nancy Hutto and Gretchen Pope, both of Decatur, Ga.; six grandchildren, Ravel Ulmer, Renee' Mundy, Evan Hutto, Angela Mathis, Sheryl Hutto, and Wesley Hutto; seven great-grandchildren and a half-sister, Mattie Lou England of Indiana.

Friends may call at the residence, 508 Cedar Lane, and at Thompson Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at Thompson Funeral Home in Orangeburg.

Note from Vida Hale Pope

S/Sgt. Buck R Hale was working in the Norfolk shipyards when he was called to the service. His company offered to get him a deferment but he declined. Not wanting to have to kill anyone, he served as a medic. He arrived in Europe in the fall of 1944, just before the Battle of the Bulge. After the battle, his unit wound up in Holland where they hoped to get some rest. They had planned to sleep in a school, but the local towns people offered to house the men in their homes. S/Sgt Hale and two of his friends stayed with the Snyder family. Less than two weeks later he was killed. The Snyder family searched out his grave, took pictures and included them in a letter to his mother.

VINCENNES, Ind. - Syble Hale Ridings died peacefully on Friday (Nov. 1, 2002) at her daughter's home in Vincennes, Ind., after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. Ridings was born Feb. 9, 1923 in St. Charles, Va. She was the daughter of Maud Coffman Hale Sprinkle and Evan Hale. She attended elementary school in Tifton, Ohio, and graduated from St. Charles High School in 1942.
Mrs. Ridings was employed at the St. Charles Neighborhood Action Center for several years before retiring from Lee County Community Hospital. She was a long-time member of the First Christian Church in Pennington Gap, Va.
She was married to the late Claude Ridings of St. Charles, and had four children; Philip Ridings of Indianapolis, Ind., Phyllis Carling of Vincennes, Ind., Betty Dizney of Dryden, Va., and Ray Ridings of Roanoke, Va. Two brothers, Evan and Ravle Hale, preceded her in death.
She is survived by one sister, Vida Pope of Orangeburg, S.C.; a half sister, Mattie Lou England of Gas City, Ind.; and a half brother, Ed Sprinkle of Marion, Ind. She had six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be this evening and all day Monday at the home of Mike and Betty Dizney in Dryden, Va.
Services will be conducted by Kenneth Kehrer at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Pennington Gap, Va.

Born November 8, 1915, he was a retired farmer and member of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rebecca (Higgins) Hale and Sid Hale; and his wife, Otie (Smith) Hale. Survivors include two daughters, Pansy Williams and Rebecca Williams, both of London, Ky.; a son, Charles Hale of Carmi, Illinois; a sister, Geneva Looney of New Miami, Ohio; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Reba (Short) Bolton of East Bernstadt, Kentucky; five daughters, Mary Sizemore of London, Kentucky, Eulene Asher of Andrew, Indiana, Louise Dixon of Columbus, Indiana, Irene Asher and Ruth Carrol, both of Dalton, Georgia; three sons, Charles Bolton of Wabash, Indiana, Merle Bolton and Don Bolton, both of Dalton, Georgia; a sister, Roxie Witt of Corbin, Kentucky; a brother, Clifford Bolton of Indiana; 23 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, January 23, at the London Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Henry Bowman and the Rev. Kaney Hoskins officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hale Cemetery in the Robinson Creek Community with the local DAV in charge of military honors. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

Hayden Watkins, 79, London, Ky., died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006 at Oak Tree Hospital in Corbin. He was born Oct. 27, 1927 at Tuttle in Laurel County, to the late Dan and Fannie Hall Watkins. After completing public school there, he served 18 months with the Signal Corps of the United States Army. He attended Eastern Kentucky State University and graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1951 with a B.S. degree in agriculture. From October 1953 to February 1962, he was employed by the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. During this time, he did graduate study at George Washington University. In 1952, he took sabbatical leave for additional graduate study. He received the M.S.A. degree from the University of Kentucky cooperative extension service as area extension agent and state specialist in turf. From August 1976 to November 1988, he served as area environmental director for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He was a past president of the Somerset Lions Club and a member of the American Society of Agronomy. Survivors his wife Regina Dalton Watkins, London, Ky., and one sister, Maize Sativiski, Gary, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Delmar Watkins. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church with Rev. Roger Wolfe and Rev. Seymour Wattenbarger officiating. Pallbearers will be Bill Curtis, Chuck Hill, Greg Hill, Jeremy Hill, T.J. Lambert, Al Lowery, Dan LaTurno and Jason Wolfe. Burial will follow in the Hale Cemetery. Willa Jean Metcalf, 78, of Aurora, died April 20 at Aurora Nursing Center following a long illness.

Mrs. Metcalf was born February 17, 1930, in Long Lane, the daughter of Virgil and Amzelle Wilson Hale. She worked on a dairy farm and was a Baptist.

She married Clinton Metcalf on November 24, 1950, in Phoenix, Arizona, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Jump of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one son, Stephen Metcalf of Springfield; two sisters, Nollie Seitz and Carol Wilson; three grandchildren, one great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Hale.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home in Aurora with Chaplain Jack Betts and Rev. Arnold Ray Evans officiating. Burial will be in Monett IOOF Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the funeral home.
