    Carl W. Newman, age 99 3/4, of Gate City, VA went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at his residence following a period of declining health. Carl was born in Roda, Virginia on November 18, 1919, a son of the late ElKanah “EK” and Mattie Mae Kegley Newman. His family moved to Exeter, Virginia where he grew up. He graduated from Appalachia High School in 1937. He was a talented baseball player who was known as “Lefty” and received several offers to play professional ball.

    He then attended Berea College in Berea, Kentucky where he graduated in 1943 with honors, majoring in math and physics. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended Officers Training School at Columbia University, New York. He was headed to the Pacific on a destroyer named the “Colahan” where he was the Gunnery Officer. At the end of the war, he was present at the signing of the Peace Treaty. His ship escorted the Japanese ships into Tokyo Bay. After the war, he attended University of Virginia Law School in Charlottesville and graduated in 1949. Carl practiced law for over 30 years. He was a membe of Gate City United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for over 40 years. Carl was a former member of the VA State Bar Association and Scott County Bar Association.

    Carl was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Blanche Calton Newman; loving son, Woody Calton Newman, and all of his sisters and brothers.

    He is survived by his loving daughter and son- in- law, Suzanne and Terry Goins; special niece, Opal Brown; several nieces and nephews; special sister-in-law, Jenny Barton.

    Graveside Services will be 12:00 noon Saturday, August 31, 2019, at Holston View Cemetery with Rev. Gordon McBride and Rev. Tony Nunley officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Hammond Post 3/265 and Virginia National Guard. For those wishing to attend, please meet at the cemetery at 11:50 AM. A Celebration of Life service is planned at a future date.

    The family would like to extend special thanks to his caregivers, Melissa Hicks, Brooke Osbourne, Charlotte Osbourne, Jedus Lawson, Sue Carter and Casey Goode.

    KINGSPORT - Edith K. Hawkins, 82, of 417 Hobart St., Indian Springs community, passed away early Tuesday (April 20, 2004) at her residence.

    She was born in Roda, Va., and had been a resident of the Kingsport area since 1947. Mrs. Hawkins was a member of Indian Springs Baptist Church and retired from Kings Department Store. Prior to her retirement she also worked at S.H. Kress in downtown Kingsport.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Newton Hawkins, Oct. 20, 2003; her parents, E.K. and Mattie Mae Newman; and one brother, Paul Newman.

    Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Larry Hopkins of Omaha, Nebr., and Anita and Glenn Jennings of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; one son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Shirley Hawkins of Kingsport; two brothers, Carl Newman of Gate City, Va., and E.K. Newman of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one sister, Christina Pennington of California; four grandsons, Richard Crask, Robert Goddard, Joseph Goddard and Chett Hopkins; two granddaughters, Eyde Aarhus and Katie Jennings; two great-grandsons, Connor Hopkins and Charles Ross Goddard; and several nieces and nephews.

    Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.

    E.K. NEWMAN JR., 79, of Fort Wayne, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at his residence.

    Born July 15, 1924, in Exeter, Va., he was a truck driver for Wolf & Dessauer and later L.S.Ayres & Co., retiring in 1986 after 33 years.

    Survivors include his wife, Gloria Newman; daughters, Denelda Jo Newman of Portland, Princess Newman of Fort Wayne and Watanna Brown of West Memphis, Ark.; son, E.K. (Rachel) Newman III of Fort Wayne; stepson, Grenda Harmer of Only, Tenn.; brother, Carl Newman of Gate City, Va.; sister, Christina Pennington of Big Springs, Calif.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by his daughter, Melody Newman; and son, Rodney Newman.

    Memorial service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Pentecostal Church, 935 Farwood Ave.
