    MARION, Va. Shirley W. Smith, age 85, died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Francis Marion Manor, Marion. She was a lifetime member of Davis Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women. Shirley was a graduate of Radford College and taught first grade at Marion Primary School for 27 years, teaching over 700 children to read and write. She was also active in the Red Cross and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Smyth County. She was an expert seamstress and quilter, as well as a gifted piano player. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kelly and Fannie Atkins Williams. Shirley is survived by her husband, William D. "Bill" Smith of Marion; son, David G. Smith and wife, Lisa, of Waxhaw, N.C.; sister, Jean Hash of Atkins, Va.; grandson, Samuel Smith; niece, Barbara Moore; and nephews, Doug, Pat and Bobby Hash. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion.
