Mrs. Alma Wampler Sharp — Sumter

Mrs. Alma Wampler Sharp, 98, widow of the Rev. Sam Howell Sharp, died Thursday, August 3, 2006, at Jolley Acres Healthcare Center, Orangeburg, after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 6, at the First Church of God with the Rev. Ron Bower and the Rev. Bill Neece officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Harold Turner III, Stanley Wampler, Johnny Ricketts, Wayne Gordon, Keith Gordon and Jim Keith.

Born June 19, 1908, in Rural Retreat, Va., a product of the Great Depression, she was the daughter of the late John Robert Wampler and the late Mary Wampler. Mrs. Sharp was a devoted wife, mother, and pastor's wife. She took great delight in her family and in serving God and others. A champion for the underdog, Mrs. Sharp lovingly visited the often-forgotten elderly and protected and fed stray animals and hungry people. She received more pleasure in giving small gifts of money to those who needed a little help than in self indulgence. Where she was, there was fun and laughter. Throughout her life, she served the Church of God Movement (Anderson, Indiana affiliated) with her husband the Rev. Sam Howell Sharp. Most significantly, she practiced "loving the unlovely."

Survivors are three children, Robert Howell "Bob" Sharp and wife Donna, of Sumter, Emily Sharp White and husband Peyton, of Orangeburg, and Richard Wilkes "Rich" Sharp and wife Donna, of Anderson, Ind.; five grandchildren, Cindy Sharp Turner, Rea Sharp Glancy, Alison Sharp Watford, Bobbie Sharp Owens, all of Sumter, and Susan Sharp Nieten, of Noblesville, Ind.; eight great-grandchildren, Harold, Caroline, and Sharp Turner, Rebecca and Kaitlind Glancy, Sam and Lindy Watford, and Madeline Owens, all of Sumter.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.

The Rev. H. Melvin Wampler, 84, of St. Peters, Mo., formerly of the Bronx, N.Y., and Groseclose, (Virginia) died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Dardene Presbyterian Church, Dardene, Mo. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 30, at 8 p.m. at Lindsey Funeral Home, Rural Retreat. Burial will be held Friday, Dec. 31, 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Groseclose.
A minister for more than 50 years, he was a past member of "Who's Who in America in the East." He was a former president of the Bronx Protestant Council and vice-president of the New York City Protestant Council. He pastored the Pilgrim United Church of Christ in the Bronx, N.Y., for 39 years and was pastor emeritus.
He is survived by his wife, Emily Speer Wampler of St. Peters, Mo.; one son and daughter-in-law, Stanley E. and Raphaela Vazquez Wampler of St. Peters, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Matthew F. and Jessica L. Wampler, both of St. Peters, Mo.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindsey Funeral Home, Rural Retreat.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church or synagogue of the donor's choice.
Stygar Mid Rivers Funeral Home in St. Charles, Mo. and the Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat are in charge of the arrangements.
