    Born in St. Charles, Va., he was the son of the late John Wesley and Alice Newman Bailie.

    During World War II, he worked for the shipyards in Baltimore, Md. He came back to Lee County and worked in various coal mines for over 40 years and was a member of the Local Union 8761 of U.M.W.A.

    He was a member of the First Christian Church in St. Charles.

    Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Earl Bailie; one grandchild, Carla Griffith Kelly; three brothers, Bill, Thurman and Sam; two sisters, Carrie Reach and Georgia Turner.

    Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Lillian Bailie, St. Charles, Va.; one son, Joe Bailie, Eaton, Ohio; three daughters, Joan Griffith, Okeechobee, Fla., Reida Sorah, Atlanta, Ga., Pam Hall, Ewing, Va.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

    Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va.

    Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the St. Charles United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roy Corbin officiating.

    Mr. Bailie will be taken to the church one hour before services.

    Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

    Pallbearers will be Darrell Sorah Jr., John Sorah, Steven Griffith, Thomas Griffith, Chris Kelly, Mike Sprinkle, Rob Russell and Jack Turner.

    Norris Kelly Newman, age 92, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at Bristol Health and Rehab following a short illness. Mr. Newman was born and raised in St. Charles, Va. but lived most of his life in Bristol, Va. He attended Hiawassee College, Lincoln Memorial University and was a graduate of East TN State University. He was a retired school teacher having taught at Valley Institute Elementary in Washington County, Va. for 20 years. Mr. Newman was a member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church for over 55 years where he was a past Sunday School teacher and board member. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Frances Newman; his parents, Noah and Elizabeth Newman; sister, Nell Witt and a brother, Jack Newman. Survivors include three daughters, Jacquelin E. Jones and husband, George of Afton, Tenn., Carol A. Jones and husband, David of Columbia, S.C. and Linda N. Morris and husband, Joe of Bristol, Tenn; grandchildren, Angela White and husband, Scott, Ginger Jones, Allen Jones, Kevin Jones and wife, Becky, Mark A. Jones and wife, Rachel, Jonathan Bednar and Badi Montgomery; four great-grandchildren, Betsy and Chase Williams, Cole Porter and Annabelle Jones; two nephews, Kent Witt and Dennis Witt and cousin, George R. Kelly The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Anderson Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barbara Doyle officiating. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 3 p.m., Saturday in Lee Memorial Gardens, (Lee County) Woodway, Va.     Jerry was very involved with the St. Thomas More Catholic Church Community and was a member of the Munster Lion's. He had successful career as computer programmer in the steel industry.

    Jerry was an avid golfer and a faithful friend and will be dearly missed.

    Charlie began his career with TVA over 40 years ago as a home inspector in the 1970’s. He returned to college in the early 1980’s to gain knowledge in the increasing world of computers and technology and then was promoted to computer programmer. He loved his job and retired from TVA as a network administrator.

    Charlie grew up on the lakes of Tennessee helping his fathers’ work as a zoologist. He was an avid outdoorsman before his health became an issue. Among many outdoor activities, boating, and camping ranked as his favorite while enjoying nature.

    Preceded in death by parents, Jack and Edna Chance; wife, Karen Parks Chance.

    Survived by son, Allen Chance and wife Patti; daughter, Susan Chance Mintz and husband Jeremy; grandchildren, Charles Enrique Chance, Alejandro James Chance, Paulo Santiago Chance, Thomas Jackson Mintz, Elijah Charles Mintz, Austin Dennis Norton; sister, Nancy Chance Mitchell and husband Kelvin; nephew, Nathan Brown.

    The family will receive friends Wednesday 5 – 7 pm at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home, 2300 Adair Drive, Knoxville, TN 37918. The graveside service will be Thursday at 11 am at Lynnhurst Cemetery. Pastor Marcus Bates will officiate.
